I purchased a Magellan Roadmate 500 in September 2004. Last week this unit displayed a message saying that the software map data was over a year old and outdated. The message also stated that I need to call 800 707 9971 to purchase updated software.

I paid $799.00 dollars for this thing and I have only had it 3 months. If the software installed in the unit is over a year old in December 2004 then it was out dated when I purchased the unit. You would think that once I registered the unit I would get free access to updated software to load on my unit that would support my use for at least 1 year, since the life cycle of updates seem to have a one year life span.Wrong!! I have to pay an additional $99.00 to update my unit.

If I had a way of knowing that I was purchasing a unit with outdated software installed and I would have to pay an additional $100.00 to update it I would never have bought the thing. As much as this thing cost, map updates should be free.(At least for a year) I called the support department and the Rep told me I had two choices.

(1)Purchase the update
----or------
(2)Live with the annoying message asking me to purchase a
update all the time.

What a rip-off !!! Don't buy Magellan Products !!
