Magic Jack; YMAX Communications Corporation Magicjack device doesn't work. West Palm Beach Florida

I done with the Magic Jack. I wasted $46.90 on this & I was a fool not to try in the 1st 30 days. Now I cannot return it for credit. This thing is a total waste of money. It could not connect to the internet and then took me to the Magic Fix page of the Magic Jack website and asked me to download the upgrade fix (a file) that was suppose to be downloaded to my desktop. But, again after numerous attempts to download, no file was ever downloaded to my computer.

My next step was to try to contact the Magic Jack Customer Service department, which can only be contacted through there website on a chat link. The frickin company has no phone lines to there technical support group.

So, I proceeded to chat with the Technical Support group working with 4 different individuals. The first one that just hung up on me. The second rep had me change the USB port to all of my ports, had me do a number of changes to my computer firewall, check my computer system's clock, change my internet security options & then passed me on to a supervisor, Evert. Evert tried the same things the 1st rep did & then had me reformat the Magic Jack. Finally, he told me to reboot my computer, & try again to get the Magic Jack to work. Nope, same results.

So, I started my third and last chat session with Paolo, doing all the same things again. I am then passed onto a Supervisor, Roger and go through all the same things that everyone has tried with no success.

Bottomline, don't buy the Magicjack. The product doesn't work, the Magicjack Technical Support group can only be contacted through the chat link. The Magic jack website doesn't function correctly & I was never able to download the upgrade.exe file from them.

It shouldn't be this hard!! I spent the better part of 10 hours trying to get this device to work properly on my computer. I want to save money, but I don't have the time to invest in getting this device to work.

The Magic Jack stinks!! Don't buy it!! It's a Rip Off!!

I out $46.90...Tough lesson learned. Don't be fooled by the Magicjack sales pitch. The Magicjack is to good to be true, because it doesn't work as advertised, it is supported poorly, & not worth the hassle.

Not so Magic Anymore

I bought and used one of these things a couple years ago.  My experiences are about the same as others, when it worked it was cool, when it didnt was a major pain in the butt.  Chatting with fools, rebooting, and cussing often was the norm.

Now I say who needs one with google voice being offered totally free, and no "dongles" to play with!

Works for me!

Magic jack has their support in Florida BUT, It deals with 15 or more companies who handle the calls depending on where YOU are on the map in the U.S.. Magic Jack in Chicago is handled by LEVEL 3 Communication LLC Which is part of Verizons. I can tell you this that Magic Jack does not work well with wireless internet, You got to have at least 3megs download and 1meg upload Anything less than that you are throwing your money away, Also some Window 7 users have trouble when internet explorer 9 is used.

Granted the support stinks but nobody can hide if you know how to use the internet. I have Magic Jack And to me its the sweetest thing i have ever bought. Dont think I am saying this cause I work for them, I am a repossessor and use Magi Jack daily without a hitch.

Anyway, Copy or Cut and paste this link to find YOUR carrier when using Magic Jack

(((Redacted)))

Use Your area code in place of 312, (312 is my area code) go down the list until you find the first six numbers to your phone 312-123-xxxx out of the ten and you will have the carrier. Happy Hunting

GOOD LUCK

Sometimes Electronics are Frustrating

I experienced a lot of the same problems. Electronics are very tricky...when they don't work properly, you have to disconnect them and reboot. Wierd, but it works.

My suggestions are:

try a different usb port, I went through 3 before finding one that my computer liked. My internet service is ATT Uverse, my speed is only 6.

Check your firewalls and security. I know it's a scarey thing to do, but try uninstalling your MagiJack, then reboot your system. Turn off your security, I found that Norton thinks MagicJack is a virus. Then reinstall your magicjack.

When you have it working and occassionally you will find that your connection is poor. Don't have a fit, just unplug and re plug in the jack. I'm in Florida, lots of storms, so I am used to unplugging and reconnecting everything from the TV to my old land lines (which I no longer have).

Once you get your jack working, you will find that it even works with faxing (even though the company says it doesn't support faxes)

Calm down...do you remember how hard it was to learn to use a computer? This is much easier.

magic jack rip off rebuttal - magic jack is awesome

Well i am just a consumer myself. My friend in Ontario, Canada bought a magic jack for himself and one for me as a gift. When he first set his up it took 2 hours for his number to be activted that he choose. i set up mine and it was working and activated within 10minutes. the set up was so simple anybody with half a brain could do it. i am not saying you are lying, you may have gotten a bad product, it happens with anything electronic or otherwise, there are going to be a few bad apples sort of seak. I know numerous people who hae them hereand they did not even offer Canadian area codes when we bought them and still well worth the money.

You mention you spent 10 hours or so working on it. the way i think of it. I would not mind spending 10 hours trying to get something working, if I either could not do it or something went wrong in order to save and get FREE long distance anywhere in north America, FREE voice mail, call display and tons of other features FREE. Even if you take out long distance costs out o fhte picture you are still looking at saving anywhere from $40 and up a month just to have a phone line these days. To me saving over $400/yea MINIMUM is a great deal even if I spend a few hours setting it up.

I personally would like to say EVERYONE needs a magic jack. i carry it in my laptop and use it in headset mode, that allows me to use my headset or built in mic. and speakers on my pc to talk on it, i do not even need a phone. Great when on teh road or at home.

I suggest you buy it and try it, i bet a larger percentage of people will enjoyit.

PS... if you di dnot test a product you bought from the TV or Internet that has a full money back within the first 30 days of getting it, then you probably have more money than brains. Common sense would tell most people to check their product, especiallyafter the post office has played catch with it for a few days.... handle with care, eekkk ya right, if you put andle with care, the post office handles it all right :) and the more fagile marks you put on it, the farther the shot is to get it into the right bin. I know and seen it first hand at the post office...that is another story.
Wishing everyone lot of free calls and fun with their new magic jacks.

MAGIC JACK WORKS GREAT, AND MORE!

#10Consumer Comment

Sun, January 04, 2009

I bought a few hours ago a Magic Jack at my local Radio Schack for $40. After taking the dongle from the plastic case, I plugged it in my USB port, nad it started to install itself and to update its software. I hooked the telephone to the dongle through its phone jack, and next thing you know, my wife was receiving my call on her cellular telephone. Then I proceeded to call myself from her cell phone, also very successfully. I set the Call Forwarding feature from the magicjack.com website, and after calling my NEW home number from my wife cell, the call was forwarded to my [own] cellular telephone. Call Forward was also a success!

Then I proceeded to see if this little artifact could handle FAXES! I tried it first by receiving and transmitting just running widows faxing, hoping to get and transmit just using the Magicjack. It did not work. HOWEVER!, all I had to do was to was to hook the telephone cable from the magicjack dongle to my fax port. Genius, genius (like in "Mr. Deeds"). I was able to send and receive faxes, although receiving was a little bit "tricky", it took about for attempts. Neverthless, it was a success!!

I used my HP DV1000 2004 model laptop, wich is bloated with software. Even with a computer so full of add-ons, the program has perform virtually flawless. I have cable Internet and 1GB memory, running windows XP.

One thing I notice of those speaking against this fine products is the falacious nature of their attacks. They feel more like little kids who just got tired of their toy and now want their money back, without considering not only how beneficial it could be but also that this is a $20-$40 product! To them I say: Go back to your local telephone company, and give them hundreds of dollars for a service that you probably did not even use! I know that with MagicJack and my cell number and good to go for a good while.
