I am in Tennessee.  I was called one afternoon by a man from Main Street Host.  He explained to me how my web site that I had built on homestead.com was not getting the traffic that I needed and he knew just how to fix it.  For an example, he took me to a site that he had built and optimized for a person selling dogs.  He took me into the back side of that dog site and showed me how the man was getting 86 hits per day and then he showed me how now, after he took over the site, the man was getting 2600 hits per day.  He told me how many hits I was getting and explained how he could get my business booming.  I knew that what I was doing wasn't working.

It was around February of 2009 and he told me that by Christmas of that year, my site would be booming and I would be selling tons of my clothing boutique items.  His price was 10,000.00 for his services which included him building my site, doing SEO and search engine submission.  This price was a great discount to me.  He so convinced me that he could do this that I was suckered into doing it.  After 1 year of his services, I had sold a total of 2000.00 in products.  Now I am 11,000.00 in the hole because of his fee and the 1,000.00 for the cost of the goods sold.  He called me at the end of the contract to renew it for another 10,000.00.  When I refused, he offered me a deal for 1/2 price of 5,000.00 for the second year.

When I refused, he took my site off of his hosting facility.  I waited for about 3 months and I emailed the owner of the company and asked for a refund because I had not been given what I was promised.  He offered to host me for a year for free and then give me the 3rd year for 1,500.00.  My site is still not functioning properly.  They did not actually even build my site.  They just copied it from the one that I had built on homestead.com.  I think this is the biggest rip-off that I have ever heard of from a web hosting company.  When I talk to other people that want to host my site and I tell them about it, no one can believe it. My free year is almost over and I intend to move to another host.  I would be interested in joining in a law suit with others that wish to go after them.

I work for an ISP that offers *free* webhosting to internet subscribers and has huge discounts for SEO vendors. $10k is way too steep. With a price tag like that, you could put on a event and market it in the newspaper, radio, tv and other local papers in a week and have better results.

I usually see the best marketing as being free or cheap. Craigslist...Ebay.

You could even pay a couple of cute girls $100-$200 to walk around in your clothes for awhile and have them talk to people about your business. Creating a bulk of business through a personal business website seems to be a latter approach when marketing a clothing boutique. Getting people in the door to build a client base is the first approach through point to point marketing. "Face to face. "

I'm not trying to sell my services as we don't operate in NY, I just think the term "It takes money to make money" is taken way too literal now a days.
