Complaint Review: McBride's Bullies

McBride's Bullies ,mcbridesbullies.com Deaf dog no refund Lumberton, North Carolina

My daughter and I bought a bulldog puppy from McBride's Bullies, www.mcbridesbullies.com, Lumberton, NC.  The puppy was guaranteed to have no major health problems.  If the major health problem was lethal a new puppy would be provided.  There was no specific remedy defined if the dog had a major health problem that was not lethal

The puppy turned out to be stone deaf.  We had numerous conversations with Robert McBride.  He made numerous promises, each conditional on sending in some information.  We sent in all the information he requested to include documentation of total deafness from the vet, documentation on all vet visits, and an estimate of initial training costs for a deaf dog.

Robert McBride failed to honor any of the promises he made on the phone.  While I think he should have refunded most of the price, we would have settled for 50 percent refund. Not only did he not do this after promising to do so, he did not do anything he promised.

He has an okay facility but is set up to produce a lot of puppies and once he has your money he does not care one bit about you - he talks a good game, so be careful - he does not live up to anything he says.

Stay away from him.  There are many good breeders.  Contact the Bulldog Club of America to get smart about bad breeders like Robert McBride and get referrals to quality breeders.

Information about Mr. Wright's accusations

First and foremost, I am pleased that organizations exist to offer customers a conduit to express themselves. I never imagined that my business would be on the receiving end of such a forum. However, the accusations against my business and I are unjust and unsound. At the sale of every Bully I spend copious amounts of time in a discussion with the customer over the contract of sale and care of their bully (I have attached a copy). Within the parameters of the contract it states that the puppy must be examined by a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of purchase, or the contract would be void and relinquish my business of all obligations described within. The Bully in question, Simon, received his first examination 9 days after leaving my home (we were provided these records by Mr. Wright). This in itself voids the contract.

Now, to further discuss the matters that Mr. Wright has disclosed. I do not provide refunds on Bullies, as all sells are final and are stated as such at the time of sale. This is the case with all pet sales that I have interacted with and other breeders over the years. With that being stated, I always have told my customers that we will work with them to exchange the puppy if the need arises (this is the first instance of such a case). Even though the parameters of the contract we not maintained and I was not obligated to replace Simon, I was still willing to conduct a puppy exchange. Yet, Mr. Wright insisted on keeping Simon and discussing at various times refunds of as much as the full price. In no business that I have ever interacted with or been a part of have you ever been able to purchase a product; then get a refund and keep the item. On the allegations of Simon being deaf, I have yet to be afforded the opportunity to have my Veterinarian follow up to confirm/deny accordingly. Since this check was not conducted by my Veterinarian, I can only provide his assumptions. The Veterinarian that conducted the checks on Simon stated that he had congenital deafness. This means that the puppy would have been deaf from birth, and either one or both parents would have to be deaf. This is not the case none the least. Both the mother and father receive regular check-ups, and have not had any hearing issues i.e. mites, infections, or deafness. Simon was with us from his time of birth to approximately 14 weeks. During which he was always very vocal and attentive to noises and such from within and other rooms. My veterinarian stated that Simon could have been exposed to loud noises, contracted an ear infection, or obtained ear mites as some possibilities to cause deafness. He continued to state that standing water in an English Bulldogs ears is a leading cause for an ear infection. The treatment for such can be drawn from a variety of drops, which warn of causing possible deafness in the dog. While this is on the extreme end of the spectrum, it is still a factor and a risk.

As for what would happen to Simon if he was deaf and an exchange was conducted. While I cannot guarantee the exact environment that he would move onto, I can promise Simon would not be euthanized. There are organizations that utilize deaf dogs as companion/aid animals. Through some research over the past few weeks, I have found that a deaf English Bulldog can serve as an excellent companion to a wide variety of different owners. So his status would be further clarified once he was in our custody and after interviewing various candidates.

To conclude my response, while I was more than willing to continue with an exchange process with Mr. and Mrs. Wright, Simon for a new Bully, I will do such no more. Once again thank you for providing me the opportunity to respond accordingly.

Robert at McBrides Bullies is fabulous!

I have worked in depth with Robert at McBrides Bullies and he is nothing but an honest ethical straight forward person. He is very honest and very blunt but it is greatly appreciated that you can still find such an honest person in todays world. No breeders ever give refunds and people always want to complain about the terms they willingly agreed to when they originally bought the puppy after the fact. Terms were outlined that you would only get a replacement not cash and only after you allowed him to take the dog to his Vet. and you refused to do so. As far as he or anyone else knows this dog could be dead. This dogs hearling loss could have been induced by medication given to him in past as well. Why you would not take a repalcement is beyond understanding as NO breeders refund money. It is standar within this business. IF a person choses to forgo a reaplcement then they lose tehir right to any further claims. Simple. I would suggest Robert at McBrides bullies to anyone. He is very honest and very straight forward. You know what your dealing with and getting from day one as he doesnt beat around the bush with anything. If this is the only complaint you can come up with then I think all can see thsi is a great breeder. You can please everyone esoecially those who have no regard for the contract terms they knew and willingly agreed to in advance.
