Our monthly long distance phone bill was around the $40.00 mark for months, then this last month 10/15/2001 it went up to $80.00 and the reason I was given through MCI was that the FCC raised the rates. This is disheartening because there was no notice given just showed up on the bill. I asked who can I call to change this and was told there was no one to call, that is a FCC choice. I have changed my calling plan to exclude this rate but not soon enough I still have to pay the $80.00 and that is going to be hard, if they had just sent a notice that it was going to be raised, I could have screened my calls closer.

Rebuttal:
Somebody's got their facts wrong. Generally speaking, the FCC doesn't set long distance rates, either interstate or intrastate.

Federal and state governments are involved in various charges (NOT taxes) that long distance carriers must pay, but it's up to the carrier to decide how those costs are passed on to customers.

If these charges were included on your local phone bill, you should be able to call the local phone company and tell them you're disputing those charges and that you want the charges removed.

MCI has a well-known habit of notifying customers of rate increases only after they take effect. State laws and regulations will determine whether MCI can legally collect from you since they didn't give you advance notice.
