MCI The Neighborhood consumer fraud misrepresentation of charges billing ripoff Iowa City Iowa
I was induced to sign up for MCI the neighborhood by a promise of lower phone bills. The rates and charges that were discussed were significantly lower than my existing service provider. I have a second Fax/modem line and that line was set up with no long distance service since I had no long distance service with my previous provider. No mention was made of the fact that the MCI calling area was different.
On my phone bills, I received over $250 in "long distance" charges for connecting to my local Internet Service Provider. When I called "customer service", they told me it was my problem. In addition, to eliminate the charges, I had to add long distance to my second line making the basic MCI srvice more expensive than my previous provider!
As a subsidiary of Worldcom, I would have thought MCI would be careful about consumer opinion since the publication of their parent company's illegal business practices. It appears that MCI as a part of the corporation engages in similar business practices.
