purchased a certified 2000 toyota corolla. Before driving one thousand miles the vehicle consumed 1 qaurt of oil. The service dept. was contacted, and I was instructed to bring the car to the sevice dept. to check for leaks. This was done and no leaks were found my wife brought the car home with no further instructions, but was told this was normal if different brands of oil was used.

After the consumption of oil did not lessen, I again contacted the dealership and brought the car back for service. I was told nothing wrong could be found and that we would have to wait and see what the toyota warranty dept. wanted to do. aftern waiting three days I was contacted and told this was normal for a car to use one qaurt of oil every 1200 miles.

I was then told a representative from the warranty dept. would be in clanton in January and for me to bring it in then. I feel this is a sad response to a serious problem but am helpless at this time to do more than wait.

warranty company approves repair

ABOUT THE SECOND WEEK OF JANUARY, I CONTACTED MCKINNON MOTORS ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF MY CAR BURNING OIL. (ONE QAURT EVERY 300 MILES) THE INDIVIDUAL FROM THE WARRANTY COMPANY WAS PLANNING TO COME TO ALABAM SOMETIME IN FEBUARY BUT DIDN'T HAVE A SPECIFIC DATE.

I ASKED THE WARRANTY REPRESENTATIVE IF WE COULD OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION TO PERFORM THE NEEDED WORK OVER THE PHONE BEING I HAD DOCUMENTATION AND PICTURES OF THE OIL STAINING THE REAR OF THE CAR.

I FELT I WAS BEING IGNORED AND MY PROBLEM WAS OF LITTLE CONCERN TO THE WARRANTY REPRESENTATIVE FORM FLORIDA. GAY HYDER CONTACTED THE REGIONAL OFFICE AUTHORIZED A SHORT BLOCK TO BE PUT IN. THE BLOCK WAS ORDERED (TOOK APPROX. TWO WEEKS AND ANOTHER WEEK FOR THE GASKET SET).

THE PROBLEMS STARTED BACK WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NOVEMBER. AFTER THE SECOND WEEK IN FEBUARY THE CAR WAS READY. MCKINNON/WARRANTY DEPT.

FURNISHED A RENTAL UNTIL THE WORK WAS COMPLETE. I WAS TOLD THERE WERE FIVE BENT VALVES, BUT COULD NOT BE TOLD IF ANYTHING ELSE WAS WRONG. THIS WAS ON A 1.8 4CYL ENGINE WITH FORTY THOUSAND MILES. I AM WAITING TO SEE THE LASTING AFFECT.

THE WARRANTY DEPT. AND SERVICE DEPT. WORKED WITH ME TO GET THIS DONE. THE FOLLOW UP RESTED ON ME. IT IS HELPFUL TO BE PERSISTANT AND PRAY. AFTER READING REPORTS FROM OTHERS I FEEL BLESSED TO HAVE THE WORK DONE IN THE PERIOD OF TIME. IT APPEARS MOST PROBLEMS ARE COMPLICATED BY THE REGIONAL OFFICE.

On 1-8-03 Mckinnon motors received authorization to put a short block into the toyota corolla. After documenting the use of oil, approx 2qrts every 800 miles and explaining the build up of burnt oil on the rear bumper, trunk, and fender I contacted Ms. Gay Hyder and she contacted the warranty representitive explaining the problem. I also contacted the previous owner who stated she did not notify Mckinnon motors of this problem when she traded the vehicle in. It is more than two months since I reported the problem. The short block has been ordored today. I hope this will resolve the problem because I know these are qaulity vehicles. I am disappointed with the warranty company for the slow response. I don't know the reason for the high oil consumption but I hope to know soon. Any responses would be apreciated my e-mail is pirougejoe@msn.com

Oil consumption

#4Consumer Suggestion

Thu, January 02, 2003

I am a A.S.E. Certified Automotive Technician.

I have dealt with this same concern in General Motors as well as Chrysler-Dodge. Chrysler-Dodge being my current employment. It is acceptable to have up 1 qt. oil consumption every 3000 miles. with no external or internal leakage. How you may ask is this?

New vehicles do have a break in period this is usually 500 miles. The oil can pool in recesses in the engine that never drains, say maybe 1/4 - 1/2 a qt. the rest simply gets burned in the combustion process as this oil is on the cylinder walls to coat and lubricate the wall to piston ring contact, during the seating of the rings.

After that first 3000 you should notice a drop in consumption, but do not be alarmed if there is still some consuption. That is simply the oil doing its part to lubricate the motor and is normal.

This is based on a 3000 mile oil and filter service interval under normal (or suitable driving conditions for the model vehicle)
