Memorex and/or web-rebates.com are cheating people out of rebates by demanding something that is not specified on their rebate form.

The rebate is: "Buy a Memorex Internal 16x16 Double Format Double-Layer DVD Recorder (Model 3202 3292) and Receive a $20.00 Rebate Check by Mail."

The rebate form simply says to enclose "The original UPC cut from the product pacakge". So I cut out the UPC on the bottom of the box and submitted it with the rest of the requirements.

NOW the rebate website "It did not meet the product proof-of-purchase requirements as stated on the order form. One or more UPC labels cut from the package must be submitted."

ONE OR MORE UPC LABELS?

Fortunately, knowing rebate companies, I saved the box (I wonder how many customers didn't?). SO - I looked all over the box and, sure enough, on the end panel is ANOTHER UPC.

IF THEY WERE GOING TO REQUIRE THIS ONE, ALONE - OR IF THEY WERE GOING TO REQUIRE BOTH - THEY SHOULD HAVE CLEARLY STATED IT ON THE REBATE FORM.

This item was purchased from frys.com, and it is my understanding they have "tons of them" to sell for Memorex.

I wonder how many consumers are getting caught in this trap?

It sounds like a huge rip-off - at $20 a pop.

I believe this is blatantly dishonest, as either UPC will identify the product.

Finally...Young America seems to be the problem.

Well, I finally received the check on June 15th.

Ironically, another Memorex rebate sent to Texas came the next day, even though it was submitted over a month later.

Perhaps the Young America, MN rebate handlers is the problem.

Update On This Rebate

Are UPC codes ALWAYS on the side...? My memory says "no", but I have never pay that much attention to them. A note on the rebate form, like I have seen on other rebate forms, would avoid this problem.

It turns out the barcode on the side was the only one they wanted, but there were also 2 larger bar codes on the bottom of the box. Those are the one's I orginally sent, thinking "UPC is a bar code". Further confusion occurred with Memorex's cryptic refusal statement of "It did not meet the product proof-of-purchase requirements as stated on the order form. One or more UPC labels cut from the package must be submitted.".

Anyway, I never did get a response from 3 inquiries I emailed thru the website.

3-4 weeks ago, I called the Rebate phone number. The lady on the phone told me what I needed - fortunately I still had the box - and gave me an address to send it to. I did that the next day.

A few days ago, 8 weeks after I mailed the rebate, I received a refusal letter giving me a DIFFERENT address to send the UPC to.

I called the Rebate number, again, and told them the UPC had been sent to a "Special Handling" address. (All this time there had been no change in the rebate status on the website, and an email was sent...no response.)

I had started out my call asking for a supervisor, but let the support person take a shot at resolving the problem.

After a short "hold", the man came back on the line and told me he'd put things in order.

That was a week ago, and the website has said "pending" for a week.

I sent it in on March 19th, today is May 18th...9 weeks and 3 days.

We'll see what happens.

More to come...

A upc code is the code that is on the side or end of a box, NOT on the bottom. Those on the bottom are the actual container upc's NOT the product upc.
