This Merchant's Credit Co is trying to stick me with $1028.02. A 1992 credit card I paid off all debts about 8 years ago in order to purchase a house. I settled this account for a lesser amount.

These are scavenger debt buyers who are known for attempts to collect illegitimate debts.
They just play the default judgement thing. So send them a debt validation request by certified mail, return reciept requested.
You are asking for something they most likely cannot provide, so you will most likely never hear from them again.
File an FTC complaint online also at www FTC gov.
Do an internet search and see the hundreds of complaints on these fools.
They are one of the worst in the nation.
