Received a collection letter for a balance of $238.78 from Amoco. When i called them at their (888) number was told original balance was 201.53 and was incurred in 1992.

When I told them I was unaware of any debt to amoco the girl said I would have to send a letter of dispute to their chicago address. She verified last 4 ss#. When I asked for more information on this debt she became sarcastic and replied "like what?"

Merchants' got my credit history report

I just reviewed my credit report history from the three big reporting agencies -- and there it was on one of them, an "inquiry" from Merchants' Credit Guide Co., just before I got my first demand letter from dear "Ken Hughes." So of course they had my SSAN and everything else on my credit report.

Still, I've beaten them -- and there was no further evidence on any of my reports of MCGC returning to cause damage.

I guess our reports are there for the taking by anyone with the money and a good scam.

It is illegal for them to even collect a 14 year old debt. It is past the Statute of Limitations for collections.

File an FTC complaint online at; www FTC gov.

Also read the FCRA and the FDCPA on the FTC site, print out and save.

Send a CEASE COMMUNICATIONS request by cerified mail/RRR.

Read other posts in the Collection Agencies categories. It is spelled out in detail several places.

Good luck!

NEVER give or in any way confirm your SS#, DOB or any other info to a debt collector over the phone! NEVER! NEVER!

Always just get a mailing address from them and then no more phone conversations.EVER.

Everything in writing! Everything certified mail/RRR. Do a search and see multiple other threads on these jerks.

Do your homework. Do an Internet search.
