Complaint Review: Mervyn's dba Retailors National Bank

This is an interesting story. I pulled my credit report to find Mervyn's had written and old account (I believe from the 80's) off to bad debt. Wanting to settle, I called the credit collections office to find the company who had taken over my account. The representative, Mr. Robertson was verifying all my informaiton when he asked for my employers phone number. I stated I could not give that number and offered my cell number as an alternative.

After trying to pry it out of me a few more times he stated that he could not proceed any further until he had my work number. I explained that I was trying to settle the account and he refused to do so because I would provide my work information. I tried to explain my situation again (I was going to settle in full that day) and he said he could not do anything further and hung up on me!!!

Now go figure....I was in bad debt, called to pay it off and the collector refused to comply. What is wrong with this story??
