Metropolitan Educational Enterprises/ BKX, INC. Company targets military personnel! Chicago Illinois
My wife is an active duty service member currently stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. A couple of months ago we received a note in the mail saying " we have a free gift for military families...just call and we will deliver this expensive gift to your door!!" We didn't think much of it at first, but we called anyways. They said they were sending somebody over with our gift the next day. Surely enough a man named Daniel J. Fridrich came, but he didn't have anything with him!?!.. on top of that my wife had staff duty that evening so she wasn't around when he arrived. He insisted that because this "gift" was "sooo expensive", he had to make sure she was there to accept the "gift".
A few days later he was back this time with my wife present. He said that in order for him to hand over our gift all he had to do was explain what it his company does. He told us his company works with the Military to offer great deals on books, encyclopedias, etc. My wife who is also attending school was quick to jump on board. He finished off by giving us a three day paid vacation anywhere in the U.S. (Which we never took) We signed a contract, that stated we would pay $2547.68 for a 22vol. World book encyclopedia and other products. Right off the bat, i noticed things were shady when the contract was under BKX, INC. and not Metropolitan edu., also the trip was being paid for by A.C.S ! Anyways, we would pay about $80 a month w/ no interest.
We waited two months and still nothing was delivered, so we called, the phone goes straight to a message machine. We simply wanted to know where our books were. A week later we decided to call and cancel since we suspected something was wrong. Once again no answer, but we got a return call soon after. The man who called "Mr.James" was rude an basically told us that it was too late and if we wanted to cancel we would have to sue them!! Just like that!! I was shooked! My wife was blazing mad, but she didn't want to stir-up anymore problems. Now slowly but surely we are getting our over priced books (Checked the prices online and found they are cheaper than what he said they cost).
People please keep an eye for these " too good to be true" deals. Its a shame these companies target hard working soldiers who protect our freedoms everyday. As for us, we are still unsure as wheter to take actions against M.E.E.
