My mom received a $50 Michaels gift card, and used it. When she used the last of the credit on the card, the store clerk confiscated the card, saying she couldn't keep it. (I used to work at Jo-Ann Fabrics and the procedure was pretty much the same there.)

Mom had to return some of the merchandise (this is rare for her; she's not in the habit of abusing return policies). She asked for the credit on a new gift card, since the old one was taken from her. The clerk simply gave her a receipt and told her she could use the receipt instead.

When Mom tried to use her store credit yesterday, the clerk refused to ring up her purchase, claiming that she needed to have her original card (which another employee took from her without her consent!) and that she'd basically lost $38 worth of store credit. The manager also refused to help. We tried the next closest store - same story. (If I had screwed a customer out of store credit at Jo-Ann, I would have been fired and thrown out of the building. Michaels does not seem to train, let alone discipline, their employees.)

Our extended family spends a small fortune on custom framing, paint, and other craft supplies at Michaels each year. We hope they realize how much money they're going to lose over our lifetimes unless they return my mom's stolen store credit.
