I have 1992 nissan and had break light on. Since the car was old, I wanted to make sure my brake was okay. Upon arriving to midas at Garland, TX location, MAYBE mechanic started inspecting my car and came back to me within 10 minutes. He said I need to change whole brake system including master cylinder, rotor and all asking for $960.00. He said my brake fluid was leaking and not repairable. I never had to fill up brakek fluid while I was driving the car for a year. WIth a doubt, I refused the service and of course ,the MAYBE mechanic asked for $20 for inspection.

On my way home(braeks was still working fine. I never had a problem), I realized my parking brake wasn't not fully released. As soon as I release the parking break, the brake light went off. Brake still just works fine.

I have no idea all Midas location is just like this branch. The branch just tried to rip off any customer who might not know about car. I have filed a complaint to their corpoart headquarter and heard nothing from them.

Be aware that MIDAS is not a shop you can trust.

Wow, I went to Midas a few years ago and they inspected my Brakes for free.. There is a sign that displays it....... They told me I needed brakes to the tune of $300.00....... went to Dealership where a friend works and was told they were just fine...... I had them changed over a year later.....

I'll try to keep this brief.

I had 1990 ford probe with over 200,000 miles on it. When the brakes seriously started going, I got a quote from Midas. I needed Calipers(the existings were the originals)pads, rotors and an E-brake cable (it had a manual trans).
total including labor. 1,300.00

I actually did the work in a backyard for 300.00.
Why the price differance?

The only piece that i couldn't get aftermarket was the e-brake cable. had to get it at ford and it was 218.00 by itself. the rotors were 13 each side for front and 12 each side for rear. pads were like 25.00.

Price mark up is huge at most places. Midas is no exception to this rule. The same rotors would've been 35-40 a piece at midas, the e-brake cable would've been 500.00. labor is like 50-60 an hour.

one thing i can say for such places: If your car is in critical shape, you will have to sign a waiver just to drive it off their lot.
I had that happen at a Firestone tire center when they found a bad wheel bearing while changing tires. you don't sign it, be prepared for a tow truck.

That's one way to know if something is seriously needed or not.

Midas in Mesquite, Texas hands on and honest

I never had my vehicle serviced at the Midas in Garland but I have had it serviced at the Midas in Mesquite, Texas. The manager(I think his name was Troy or Trey) was very helpful. He told that my brake pads still had 1/5 of the life left. He told me we could change them now or wait if I wanted to.

He walked me out to the vehicle and showed me the brakes with all of the wheels off. If someone gave me an outrageous estimate, I would have them show me everything and explain why it all needed replaced.

MIDAS IS A RIPOFF

JASON,

I HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE SEVERAL YEARS AGO. MY VW JETTA WAS DUE FOT INSPECTION AND I KNEW I NEEDED BRAKES AND A MUFFLER. MIDAS QUOTED A PRICE OF ALMOST $1400 BECAUSE ACCORDING TO THEM MY ENTIRE BRAKE SYSYTEM AND MUFFLER SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I TOLD THE MIDAS GUY PUT MY TIRES BACK ON AND I AM GOING TO HAVE TO GET BACK TO HIM BECAUSE THE REPAIRS WERE MORE THAN I EXPECTED.
I WENT DOWN THE STREET TO MEINEKE AND THEY THE MECHANIC THERE SEEMED ALMOST APOLOGETIC WHEN HE QUOTED ME $450. THEY DID THE WORK AND AFTER I PAID THEM I SHOWED THEM THE ESTIMATE FROM MIDAS AND THE MECHANIC STARTED LAUGHING AND CALLED HIS MANANGER OVER AND HE COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT MIDAS HAD TRIED TO CHARGE ME.

This is the exact reason this site was created. This thread shows a true ripoff being attempted. Attempted fraud, is equal to committing fraud.

This site wasn't created to let people complain about their own stupidity. It was created to show business out there who try to screw the consumer.

Good job, Jason. Bravo-lingus. The only way to get rid of roaches is to shine a light on them. You did that. Hopefully, more in your community will follow your lead and use the power of the economy to stop them.

Our friend Jason just demonstrated how a dishonest shop will try to sell you a repair you THINK you might need whether you truly need it or not. He WAS ignorant in that he didn't check his emergency brake, but it was horribly dishonest of the shop to try to take him for $1,000 when there wasn't an issue with his brakes.

Note to previous commentator... attempting to rip someone off is as bad as actually ripping them off. I agree that a lot of the complaints on this website are ridiculous, but this guy has a legit complaint.

Many years ago, I was also a potential victim of a Midas shop. I am not filing a separate complaint, because it was so long ago. I THOUGHT I needed new struts, so I went to a Midas in Baton Rouge, LA. Oh, yes, they were definitly bad. They even had the car up on the rack ready to start work... until I produced my warranty papers. Suddenly, they didn't need to be replaced anymore and the shop refused to replace them under warranty. I filed a complaint and all Midas did was to send me to another shop in BR who agreed that they didn't need to be replaced. They did nothing to the dishonest shop that tried to rip me off.

The moral of the story is that not all Midas shops are dishonest... but since there corporate HQ does nothing about the bad shops, it is best to look elsewhere for your repairs.

You took your car to Midas for a brake diagnostic. They diagnosed the brake system issues and gave you a quote to repair it. You declined the repair. There is no rip off. Just an ignorant consumer.
