Midland Credit Management, Inc. Rcvd "Settlement Opportunity" notice for an invalid debt. Called Midland & they wanted me to confirm my social secuity number over the phone. I refused. Sent a written notification to MCM that "I dispute the validity of the debt" and I haven't heard from them since. Los Angeles California

On 06/14/08 I received a "Settlement Opportunity" letter (dated 06/06/08) from MCM Dept 12421 PO Box 603, Oaks, PA 19456. The letter came addressed in my maiden name (I've been married for over 20 years). I could tell the letter was "purposly" misformatted (using regular and bold fonts including itialics, and inappropriate indents and margins to make it very difficult to read from top to bottom let alone to understand it's actual intent.

It also included (on it's reverse side) a full page of basic and unformatted text that made even the most cautious reader squirm. Included with the letter was an "opt out" notice (2 sided) that made your eyes want to cross and just made you want to throw it away. It looked like "solicitation mail" from an unknown and unwanted source.

But, because I noticed it came addressed in my maiden name I was "curious" about who, what, and why it would be addressed in this way. So, I spent about an hour trying to read and understand "everything" I was supposed to do according to the letter(s). I knew I did not owe "anybody" any amount of money under my maiden name and both my husband and I were angry that this company said I did.

We've worked "very" hard to maintain our "excellent" credit rating & score. We were appauled that this so called Midland Funding LLC (Limited Liability Company) thought we were just going to ignore their letter and provide them with the legal opportunity & amunition to say "because we didn't contact them within 30 days that we dispute the validity of the debt" that they have the right to collect something that is not owed. I called & sent them our written notice.
