I was contacted by Midland Credit Management with a bill for $576.77, saying it was from a bill I had not paid when I lived in California in 2001, and owed to Pacific Bell, dba AT&T of CA, and that I needed to pay it to repair my damaged credit. They even told me I would receive a 10% discount if paid immediately.

I have never lived in California, I have never had an account with Pacific Bell or AT&T, and my credit reports show no sign of this debt. This is a reactivation of an attempt made last year for the same debt.

When contacted last year, I contacted AT&T, and they confirmed that they had no record of any account bearing my name. I then tried to get more information, but was told it was not available.

Next I contacted my State Attorney General, who contacted the creditors at that time and told them to either provide the information within 30 days or drop the case.

About 45 days later, my Attorney General informed me that the case had been closed due to lack of proof. Now I am once again being harassed, saying that I have to fill out a Fraudulent Account Statement and sign and notarize it to end the collection attempt.

This is a ripoff! I guess I am going to have to recontact my State Attorney General to put an end to all this.

They are trying to extort info from you in order to apply it to the debt and somehow make it yours. THEY have to prove you owe it. Send a debt validation request letter certified-return receipt requested. And stay off the phone.
