Complaint Review: Miles Shumilak

Miles Shumilak The List Mag / Higher Minds Miles Shumilak Con Artist - TheListMag is a Scam , Internet

Miles Shumilak is a classic con artist.  He is incredibly friendly over the phone and in person and seemed smart enough, but will jump at the opportunity to screw you over.  He screwed my business out of a listing on his site, and totally ignored my attempts at resolving things.  After chatting with many others (4 now!) who've had bad experiences with Miles, I feel duped.  Some were screwed out of just $25 for the listing, and others screwed out of several hundred dollars.  In my case, I was just ignored after paying, with no services rendered.  Promises promises, ignored emails, etc.  I thought it was just laziness, but others said he just spends the money recklessly (bars & drugs (cocaine specifically)) and then ignores customer service calls & emails, blocks social media, etc.  Do not work with Miles!  He has no principles.

I believe everyone should have an opportunity to learn from mistakes, and to go on to lead a better life.  Miles Shumilak/Miles Mayer/Emily Smith, or whoever you really are, you have had plenty of opportunity to make those changes and make those amends and yet you continue to reformulate new ways to scam people...a different company, a different name, you are a CON and that is certainly nothing to be proud of. Sad for the "human" that you are, may you find a better way and stop victimizing innocent people. :(

I just wanted to warn you that I believe Miles Shumilak is now operating on Facebook as Miles Mayer. (Google photo matches one in his FB photos.)

He also is believed to be operating a similar scam under the company Bandwidth Daily Media, using either another assistant in the con, or using the alias of Emily Smith. He/They are targeting hungry musicians with promises of features in an on-line magazine at this website link: www.bndwdth.media -- Which was a full fledged artist profiling page, seemed very legitimate, but now is mysteriously "under construction" and their Instragram profile has no posts at all anymore. They collect money from aspiring musicians and never deliver the article.  Several musicians have posted links saying thanks for the feature, read the full artickle here, with website links that have been broken now...so this con has even gone as far as putting up some interviews for some people along the way, prior to ditching out of the site.

The person contacting is "Emily Smith" and she says all sorts of enticing positive things to the artist, quoting relevant info about them ie. new songs, website or facebook page posts, and even asks direct specific questions for the "interview"

Then asks for the money and says the editor will be in contact soon! Very polite. Nothing materializes after the money is transferred.  Kind of a sad scam for aspiring young musicians who are so trusting and don't know the number of con artists who are out there in the industry.

I have seen quite a few complaints on-line about the Bandwidth Media being a scam, how it is linked with "Emily Smith" and this Miles Shumilak con. (or Miles Mayer if that's his real name.)

Although his rebuttal seems to make excuses, and ask for understanding, I believe it was truly a SCAM and that he is now operating a similar SCAM with an alias or aliases.

Please be cautious, everyone! :(

Dear Miles Shumilak,

you still seem to be ripping people off, this is what happened to me:

2015-03-11 -One of your staff at www.gentlemangenius.com contacted me for a "rising artist feature" (mentioning nothing about payment at first).

2015-03-12 -I recieved questions that I answered by e-mail together with press pictures, files etc.

2015-03-14 -I got this e-mail (which I said yes to):
"Cool Joni we're stoked to have you (emailed you about flyers). I talked to the team and we'd also like to give you extra visibility and ongoing coverage on the homepage as one of our GG Editor's Picks. We don't do this for everyone but we have a lot of content so this would give you a much larger reach with extra perks ... interested?

Front Page Placement >> Feature will receive headline promotion as a cover story and web banner at the top of our news feed on the homepage, ensuring maximum exposure to a larger audience. (includes three months of ongoing publicity)
Audience >> Approximately 31,000 weekly subscribers. (attached)
Total Cost >> $25 (one time only, references available)"

2015-03-14 -I got this e-mail:
"Awesome glad to have you, you're an ideal fit for our audience. We'll get this first piece set up and for the next 90 days please attach any event flyers, music releases or news updates to this email thread and we'll feature them. Our web guys will send a paypal invoice over for your review, once you approve we'll get started within 24 business hours. Thanks we'll be ready."

2015-03-15 -I payed through paypal and after that nothing happened, I´ve been e-mailing gentlemangenius without an answer, so I googled your name (that I got from the paypal confirmation) and read that you have been ripping artists and musicians off like this for years, I was lucky it was only $25.

Anyway, hope you enjoy my (and all the others) money and that you sleep well at night.

#6REBUTTAL Owner of company

This is Miles Shumilak. I need to take responsibility for these old complaints about The LIST Magazine. I don't expect to win everyone's heart over but the least I can do is explain ...

The LIST was a print mag I created in my twenties, my first attempt at running a business (with zero training or experience). At that point I had been in a band for ten years, eventually sponsored by Lamborghini and touring the country, good times but still a starving artist. Intrigued by entertainment media and entrepreneurship, I took the leap and tried running my own mag. For years I made no money, chasing advertisers etc.. Eventually I had an 'aha' moment and realized I could offer micro-ads to indie artists like myself, and build a national promotional network that we would all benefit from. It was a ton of work to communicate with hundreds of bands, but it felt good to support musicians and $25 seemed extremely reasonable.

The PROBLEM is that I was extremely naive about the workload I was committing to for such a cheap price. It quickly became overwhelming to edit so much content for so many bands who were barely paying anything. I couldn't keep up and people started getting pissed, understandably on their part. What no one realizes is that 95% of my bands were happy and successfully taken care of, but it became a massive business and I got way behind schedule, hence these angry comments. I DEFINITELY f***** up, but my goal was never to 'scam' people.

CONSIDER THIS: if I was trying to to be shady, I certainly wouldn't have friended everyone on facebook, shared my personal phone number, email, and life story with all these artists ... so they could easily put me on blast and ruin my reputation. While some of you got left hanging for $25, look at the the damage I've done to my name. It's extremely embarrassing, I'm deeply ashamed, but now I have to deal with it. At this point presently, I've already resolved and/or refunded most of these complaints, but unfortunately the internet is not conducive to people making positive comments, as anyone who's been on youtube can attest. Tempers and words get out of control very quickly when someone is sitting safely home alone on their laptop.

Bottom line is I bit off way more than I could chew at that point in my life, I got way overwhelmed, and The LIST failed. I was just a broke ambitious band guy who had a good idea that worked way too well and too fast. I'm GENUINELY SORRY, obviously I lost in the end and it'll take years (or forever) for me to fix my reputation. My friends in 'real life' love me, I'm a positive and intelligent person who made some stupid mistakes. I've learned from them and am now successfully supporting artists around the world. If you haven't already been refunded, text me at 858.771.0131 and I'll respond promptly. I'm not perfect, but I'm not evil. If you've never bit off more than you can chew ... you're not hungry enough.
