My AC/Heat knob broke completely off one day after months of being very hard to turn. It wasn't just the knob that broke, it was piece that holds it on, located behind the dash. I took it to a mechanic and he explained that this problem is common in that particular model. I then took it to the dealership and even the dealers mechanic said that it was a specific problem with that model. I asked him why it wasn't recalled and he said because it's not a safety hazard.

However I had to purchase an adapter and mini space heater just to defrost my windows ALL winter long. Seeing as my car is now stuck on A/C and I live where it's winter 6 months out of the year, I see that as a major safety hazard. I have no defrost! I have called the Mitsubishi customer service line and they gave me the run around before finally telling me I would have to submit my request in writing, which I did. That was over a year ago. Finally after giving up and needing the repairs done for my own safety I decided to just pay for it to be fixed at which point I found out it would cost over $800! They won't even look at the car without a $150 deposit which is not refunded if you go with a non-dealer mechanic. Boycott this bullshit company.

Stretching the point

You're really stretching the definition of "dangerous condition". Recalls are usually issued for problems that can cause injury or loss of life without warning. Things like loss of control, fires, problems with safety features (air bags, belts) etc... Not having a heater doesn't really qualify. If you know ahead of time that your defroster is not operational and you drive it in the winter anyway, you are putting yourself in danger.

Just about every type of car has engineering defects that cause common failures. Factories issue service bulletins about them all the time. If you're still in warranty, you get them fixed for free. If not, it's up to you to get it fixed on your own dime. That's part of the car ownership experience. Quit whining and get your heater fixed.
