In a moment of weakness I signed on with Monitronics for a three year contract. This was in April 2001

In March of 2004, having sold my house and knowing that the three years was up, I wrote to Monitronics to asking them not to renew my contract.

When I subsequently received a bill, I called and was informed, like so many others, that I had not notified them in time. They offered to move the service for free or to let the new owner take over the contract, but they would not let me cancel. Not wanting to spread the pain, I advised the new owner of my house not to use this company, and told him why. I also contacted the Federal Trade Commission and reported this incident, but they do not assist in individual cases.

I have been paying the monthly fee ever since, only to protect my credit. They owe me for the last 14 months of being paid for absolutely nothing. This is a sleazy, crooked operation that deserves to be shut down (after they pay back everyone they have ripped off). People have gone to jail for less than this.
