I called Monitronics today, 27 Jun 11 as I have just recently listed my secondary home for sale. I informed them that I would continue paying for the security services until such time as the home sold and that I would not require their services for at least the next year as my family and I would be living with another family and as such, would not be able to avail ourselves of Monitronics' services.

She informed me that I had 49 months to go on the contract and was liable for all 49 months even if I sold the house. The new owners could elect to have the coverage and take over my "obligation" but it was mine until such time as they did so.

I informed her that I would not be paying for their services after the sale of the home and they could take me to court if they so choose. I told her that it was unreasonable to ask someone to continue paying for a service they could not longer use because they did not own the home. She was quite unsympathetic and quoted the contract to me. I told her that a judge would decide if this contract was in fact illegal as it caused the consumer to have to pay for a service that was no longer being performed but they wanted payment for nonetheless.

This is exactly what I was reading about. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but this just went too far.

Platinum Protection, the company that "sold" this service to me is also guilty of misrepresentation because he never even mentioned how much it would be costing me per month, $49.99 for five years. That's $3,000 which is a lot of money to be spending on a security service. I don't have a multi-million dollar home, just 1700 square feet. This is just plain ridiculous and wrong. They should be closed down permanently.
