Brief Summary of Events:

In late September and early October of 2013, I was solicited by Matthew Cooper, representative from the Mortgage Relief Advocates group (MRA), based in California. He explained to me that MRA worked on behalf of home owners to reduce mortgage interest rates as well as principal balances that exceed the home’s assessed value. A Forensic Loan Audit would be performed by the group as the primary service offered. The audit would then be used as an aid for negotiating a principal reduction with the lender.

He further maintained that if I agreed to retain their services a Cease and Desist letter would be sent to my mortgage company as well as the documents needed to initiate a modification/principal balance reduction (PBR). The interest rate of 3.5% would be guaranteed. The PBR would not; but, he could assure me it would be done. In addition, he told me that he could not advise me to NOT pay my current mortgage. But, went on to provide information supporting why not paying it was the smarter choice.

In late October, after following up, MRA sent me a Welcome Packet. The packet included a contract and the list of documents needed to satisfy the process. I signed the contract, provided all documents requested and on November 6th 2013, I paid $2000.00 to Mortgage Relief Advocates (MRA group) by way of a wire transfer.

I was immediately notified by my lender that a Cease and Desist was received and that no further communications would be received. As a result, it wasn’t until I called them back in January I discovered my house was in foreclosure. (It now has a sale date of 10/7/2014). I contacted MRA multiple times to discuss the issue. When they finally responded they told me that there was paperwork missing which they were waiting on me to submit. Yet, I had never been asked to submit any paper work. In addition, those same documents were included in my original submission. Over the next month or so, I was repeatedly asked to send in documents which I had sent on more than one occasion. The modification was never submitted to the lender from MRA, nor was a Forensic Loan Audit ever performed. Sometime in March of 2014, MRA stopped responding to my written and verbal communications.
