Complaint Review: Carchex Auto Inspections

Leo.my son who works in one of my shops has 20 years exp too.as for you cutting down inspectors maybe you should get all of your facts.yes there are alot of inspectors out there that shouldnt be ,i will admit that.

   But I have over 38 years in the field,I am an ASE certified Master Technician,I have over 100k worth of tool at my house,not including my shop.I do work for Carchex for another inspector and  numerous other companies in the USA and worldwide for myself. In all my time doing pre purchase,pre warranty,mechanical breakdown,cause of loss,and so much more I have had 2 instances where the shops or sellers didnt agree with my results and a 3rd party inspector was brought in each of those times to do a 2nd opinion and both times came up with the same results.

   As far as these inspections what helps me is seeing the warranty failures and that gives me a working knowledge of the hereditary flaws in each brand and model car.also being in the body repair field and also ASE certified there too it is easy to spot flaws and coverups in cars no matter how good they fix them.

    I will admit there are some inspection companies that do suck,I wont name them out of respect and if they can sleep at night more power to them. I have weeded most of them out and try not to work with them.So if you would do not group all Inspectors as bad just because they contract out to other firms.or maybe your "local" people have outsourced their inspections to nationwide companies for there level of expert inspectors since maybe their "local" mechanic /inspector with ONLY 20 years expereince just isnt cutting it.

     I cover an 1800 square mile territory in North Carolina and am trusted enough to do inspections for Ford,Toyota,Honda,General Motors, along with over 50 warranty companies,numerous Insurance companies and even lawyers and more and us inspectors who know WTF we are doing do not appreciate hacks like you talking us down when you know nothing.

This outfit charges $100, and pay their inspectors $40 via Paypal - inspectors end up getting $37! What kind of service would you expect if a qualified (well, in most cases) professional drives up to 50 miles one way and does the inspection for 37 bucks! Do the math, and it turns out that 100 miles worth of gas is more than the entire "fee". Use LOCAL inspections companies - you may pay slightly more but what you get cannot even be compared to national outfits!

Here is how this business works: an agency (Middleman) has a database of individuals at various locations who they sub-contract to do the inspections. They usually pay 50% of what they charge their customers. This means that you a consumer get 50% worth of services you pay for at the most.

These agencies have certain standards that cannot be sufficiently high because a legitimated Inspector needs tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment to do good work, and there are very few of them. In other words, the vast majority of people employed by those nationwide outfits are either not qualified to do the work, don't have tools and diagnostic equipment needed or don't use them for the fee they are paid.

An industry average professional (not nationwide McDonald's-like) inspection costs about $150. When you hire a local Professional Inspector, you get 2-3 hours worth of his time unlike 20-30 minutes of a Middleman inspection. Also, when you hire a service provider directly, they work for you rather than for a middleman, and there is huge difference between not only quality but also attitude towards the service.

No matter how you look at it, you are much better off dealing with a legitimate local company than a national agency.
