National City Bank Excessive Overdraft Fees is Sickening. Indianapolis Indiana

On Feb. 9th I went to the bank to deposit my child support check as I had been carrying it around for over a week. The receipt for my deposit said that 'funds would not be available until the next business day' which in my mind was Monday. On Monday I checked my balance on-line, which I always do and the balance showed the deposit I had made on Sat. I went ahead and balanced my check book from the spending I had done over the weekend and was fine.

On Feb 13 for I called to check my balance and was shocked to find out that my balance was negative $250.00. I couldnt believe it so I went ahead and listened to the items that were posted to my account and could not believe that I had been charged 9 over draft fees of $34.00 ea.

I called the customer service line trying to find out whatever I could and I might as well discussed this with one of my dogs as they were worthless. The most that they could tell me was that when my check was deposited on Sat, it did not count into my balance until Tues because that was considered to be their next business day, and then they only made $100 available to me because the check was drawn on another bank.

I could not believe this. I was shocked and sick to my stomach. When I got to work I emailed the customer service person for the branch where I opened my account and she never replied, but the branch manager did call me back to tell me that it was not a bank error and that basically it was my fault. He told me he would have to call me back. When he did, he told me that he saw where all of the debits I had made wouldve been covererd and with funds left over, but because only $100 had been made available to my account from the check I deposited it caused me to become negative when my debits posted and when they charged me the fees. I then told him that had I known I had been negative on Tue I wouldve taken care of it sooner. But because my transactions still went through, and I was in the negative, they just kept charging me more. What a joke this bank is.

They offer you all of these programs to entice you to bank with them and then they rip you off. He did finally agree to credit me back for 4.5 of the overdrafts which was $153.00, but since I had no idea I was negative and used my card at Pizza Hut and the gas station on Tues evening those went through on Wed night and I was charged 2 more overdrafts of $34 each and now Im back to being negative $250.00

Before I was banking at Teachers Credit Union but wanted to switch to a bigger bank, with more frills and stuff. What a mistake that was. I will go back to banking with Teachers Credit Union because you know what you are getting and when you are getting it. I even stopped my direct deposit from going in today because I am NOT paying for the fees that they have charged me. They have stolen enough of my money!

The actual scam was you spending money you didn't have.

"I did have the funds available in my account to cover all of my debits had that check posted like it wa supposed to."

You spent money that wasn't there. If not, this wouldn't have been a factor to begin with. There is no ripoff on the bank's part-you spent money you didn't have and tried to skate by.

"Every time I debited from a NEGATIVE account they charged me ANOTHER $34.00 fee. How can you approve something that is not there?"

Because people like you would then be here crying how they were oh so embarrassed that their card got rejectd. It's a lose-lose for a bank.

"I would totally admit if I was wrong and had written checks against money that was not there and been charged an overdraft fee."

No you won't as this is clearly the case here based on your above statement.

"But 13 overdraft fees IS excessive"

You're right. But you shouldn't have spent the money you didn't have in the bank before you tried to cover your own overspending. The bank did not make you do this. The days of riding the float are over.

Who are you, Robert? A spokesperson for National City Bank? Tracy has a very legitimate complaint. And I think that filing a complaint with the OCC is a very valid thing to do. Let THEM determine whether or not someone's complaint is legitimate!
It's not for you to determine or for you to say! This IS a ripoff! NCB does this to all of it's customers! I've never heard of ANY bank scamming their own customers the way this bank does. Also, read the posts more carefully so you know the facts!!!!

It posted on the 11th, a Monday. The funds weren't available to draw against until Tuesday. You overdrew your account. Fees accessed. No rip-off.

National City Bank is ripping people off

I am the owner of this report and to clarify to Robert, from Wallingford CT, the bank manager ADMITTED that I did have the funds available in my account to cover all of my debits had that check posted like it wa supposed to. The calendar date was 02.09.08, the business date was 02.11.08, the deposit should have went in on THAT date. Also, was the bank correct in allowing me to continue to debit from my account even though my account was negative? They said that was a service?

That is NOT a service, the only thing that is, is a scam. Every time I debited from a NEGATIVE account they charged me ANOTHER $34.00 fee. How can you approve something that is not there? That is nothing more than a scam to rip people off. I would totally admit if I was wrong and had written checks against money that was not there and been charged an overdraft fee. But 13 overdraft fees IS excessive, and it IS a scam. I have NEVER had this happen to me and I have had a checking account for over 20 years. Its a joke and it should be illegal.

Posting date, not available date. Don't waste the time of the OCC.

They only deal with legitamate complaints.

The date that was printed on your receipt was the posting date. The funds from the check deposit do not become available to draw against until the business day after the deposit posts (and it is only the first $100). That would make $100 available on Tuesday. I don't suppose you read the funds available policy. Of course not.

You overdrew your account. There is no ripp off.

Tracy, I have also been a victim to this scam. As I suggested to the consumer previous to your post, contact the Comptroller of Currency & file acomplaint. You can get a complaint form online, print it out & mail to them. I refuse to pay the fees that they claim I owe them, but do not. I intend to file a complaint so that this bank is investigated for fraudulent business practices. Also contact the BBB in your area. Their headquarters alone, has an unsatisfactory record with them having 320 complaints against them. How horrible to scam your own customers! Good luck!
