One item other reports have omitted is the claim that a letter was sent over a month ago to which there was no response so the "collector" must assume the debt is valid. In most cases, this will be a bogus claim: there was no previous letter.

If this were a reputable collection agency:
(a) It would have a website through which potential scam victims could protest to the company;
(b) It would not demand that payment be by check made payable to the collection agency;
(c) It would demand payment be made to the magazine to which the consumer either did not subscribe or which the consumer did not renew.

It is not valid to say, "It was such a small amount and I did not want my credit record sullied so I paid it." People, give them an inch and they'll take a mile; if you let them steal a little from you, they'll be back to steal more. Resist these frauds - refuse to pay them a dime and tell tem you won't even READ the magazine again.

By the way, RipOff Report, the spelling is "agencies" not "agency's" unless you haven't yet passed the fifth grade.
