My wife received a phone call earlier today. The woman that called asked if she was Mrs. Smith (name changed). Asked my wife to confirm my social security number to confirm the debt. She indicated to my wife that the debt was from the late 90's (96 or 98, my wife can't recall exactly what year she said). She said the debt was from a department store and that it was approximately $600 and change for the debt plus $800 and change in fees, interest, etc. My wife informed the woman that she didn't have anything to say to her about the matter as the dates mentioned were before we'd even met and that she'd have to call back later to reach me.

Later in the day (not nearly as late as my wife instructed) they called back and left a voicemail. The woman claimed to be a "Samantha Kline" and that she had spoken to my wife earlier in the day. She never once mentioned the name of the company she was calling from, that the call was concerning a financial matter, that the company she was calling from was calling to collect a debt, etc.

I did some research and found that the number she provided in the voicemail (800-848-270) is the toll-free number for a company that has a record of trying to collect really old debts; debts that are beyond the statute of limitations.
