NCO listed a false debt on my credit report for a medical bill of $996, for a hospital in another state. I challenged it on my credit report, and it came back as, "valid".

I have tried repeatedly to talk to someone at NCO, but I get transferred and then disconnected. When I say I have challenged the entry, the party on the other end says " Oh, you challenged it?" and then promptly puts me on hold.

From there, I wait for several minutes until I get a recording telling me to wait (duh.), for the next representative. After that, the phone goes dead. Over and over again.

I complained to the FTC, and haven't heard back yet. What can a person do to protect themselves, when you can't prove a negative, and you can't even get anyone from NCO to talk to you?

I found this website by accident, trying to find any kind of phone number to call NCO. This is how I finally got their phone number.

Not listing their full contact information should be against the law. If an entity is accusing you of being a dead beat, they should be required to list their full profile on credit reports.

How can we stand by and let creditors post damaging information, and then accept their claims to validity, without question or proof? Ugh.

Rhonda, here is how you handle NCO

Rhonda,

This is easy to fix when done properly. First, NEVER call or speak to any debt collector on the phone. It will get you nowhere. They are not customer service. They do not care about fixing your problem. They are programmed only to collect, by any means possible.

Placing a negative on your credit is a way for them to get you to contact them. Don't fall for this.

Under federal law [FCRA] you are entitled to see what proof was given to validate a disputed debt. You are entitled to see everything involved in the verification process. However, you have to specifically request it.

Only communicate in writing and by certified mail, return reciept requested. Be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records. this is very important.

Here is the contact info for NCO:

Keep in mind that NCO is not a creditor, they are a debt collector and a junk debt buyer.

And, the FTC does not do individual enforcement, your complaint just goes into a database for future enforcement. the only response you will get is an automated form letter with generic information.

By the means described above, send a DEBT VALIDATION request where you clearly dispute the debt, and demand to see whatever you allegedly signed to create the debt, as well as a full account history and itemization of charges.

If you do this as I specified, chances are good you will never hear from them again, and the item will be removed from your credit.
