Complaint about improper billing by Netscape.com

On April 26, 2006 I signed up for a trial 30 membership (and money-back guarantee) with Netscape.com (ID: j.abron@netscape.com), but when I discovered that I was due to be billed the next day, April 27th for service, I contacted Netscape customer service and demanded that my account be cancelled immediately before any such billing. The person to whom I spoke, Michael, told me that this was a mistake, and that I would be billed on May 26th after a 30-day trial. However, I was billed the next day in my PayPal account, and although it was unsuccessful at that time, this spurred me to call Netscape again, and I spoke to a representative named Rachel who advised me that the first representative was wrong about the 30 day trial and billing after that period, instead of in advance. I asked her to close my account, and stop all billing, but found out from PayPal that this money for membership fees was taken out of my account, even though I had asked that my account be closed.

So, I called today, and spoke to a Netscape representative named James, who finally did cancel my account, and gave me a cancellation number (1855759), but the charges were not reversed, and a Mrs. Davis, who identified herself as a supervisor came on the phone saying although a mistake had been made, the company would not reverse the charges.

We have already filed a complaint with the Attorney General of Nebraska (on April 30), and if necessary will join with other dissatisfied customers to bring a class action lawsuit of the nature that was filed against America Online in 2004 for similar misleading and dishonest business practices. I am demanding that my funds be returned immediately to my account, or I will make serious trouble for your company. Properly close my account, and immediately reverse charges.

P.S., I have contacted the ripoff report (ripoffreport.com), so that thousands will know of your dishonest business practices, and will avoide your ser.

NETSCAPE owned by AOL!

#3Consumer Suggestion

Fri, May 05, 2006

Lorenzo,

First and foremost:

CANCEL any credit/debit accounts that NETSCAPE has on file for you! Now! No, YESTERDAY! Sure, it is a hassle -- but will probably save you headaches in the future by avoiding unauthorized charges in the future!

You see, Netscape is owned by AOL. This is old news -- but I have just learned this. It was no suprise for me to find the same type rip-off reports on this site for Netscape as have been filed against AOL since 1999!

You will find notes from this site's editors on how to attempt to get any unauthorized charges returned to you. Just browse around the AOL complaints -- and you will easily find this info.

To all fellow consumers:

Do NOT even bother jacking around with the customer NO service people. If you cancel your account, insist on getting a CONFIRMATION NUMBER, and CLOSE your billing account immediately. Shake the dust from your shoes and steer clear of AOL/Netscape/and ANY other affiliates forEVER! You'll be glad you did!

I am so passionate about this -- as I lost around $500 to the company.

People --

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!

Thanks Lorenzo, for sharing your story! One by one, let's shut them down!

Netscape.com, false and dishonest billing

#3Author of original report

Mon, May 01, 2006

I had tried to use the 30-day trial and like others who have complained here about Netscape.com, have found this to be a complete scam. They bill you improperly for service you do not use, will not cancel accounts after requested, and charge an excessive fee for live support when you complain. They do the same improper billing that AOL.com was sued for a few years ago.

Please let me know if you or anyone else who has abused by this scam ISP would like to file a class action lawsuit, or know if such a lawsuit is being planned. Also contact the attorney general in your state, and in Nebraska, where the company is located and make a complaint. If enough folks do file complaints, they will then have to listen. Netscape counts on folks not following through.
