Complaint Review: NEXTEL

NEXTEL ripoff. BAIT AND SWITCH operation Las Vegas? NV

  • Reported By:
    Las Vegas NV
  • Submitted:
    Mon, April 15, 2002
  • Updated:
    Mon, September 16, 2002

I recently moved to Las Vegas. Nextel then began to charge me for long distance.

I wrote to them:
Why am I being charged for long distance calls when I call California? I signed up for the ommunication Advantage 250 plan which includes, among other things, free digital cellular long distance within WA, OR, CA, NV and ID. If you changed that when we moved to Nevada, then we must change to a different carrier.

They replied:
Thank you for contacting nextel.com.

I apologize for any inconveniences you have experienced; however,
the Communication Advantage 250 does not include free Regional
Long Distance. To take advantage of this rate plan feature,
you will need to upgrade your rate plan to the Communication
Advantage 400 for $44.99, which includes 400 anytime Cellular
minutes and 1000 Direct Connect minutes. If you prefer, I can
change you rate rate to the Nextel National Connect 300 for $39.99,
which includes the following:

300 Cellular Minutes
100 Direct Connect Minutes
Free Long Distance
3600 Night & Weekend Minutes
Voice Mail and Caller ID is available for $0.50 each

I await your response.

I then wrote:
Free Regional Long Distance was in the plan I signed up for. It should have remained in effect when We transferred to the new area. I have the brochure and the signed contract.

If you will not honor the program that Nextel agreed to, then I will be forced to get telephone service elsewhere, and seek restitution for your breach of contract in court as well as the media.

I will certainly broadcast the information on the cavalier attitude about breach of contract to as many sources as I can reach, including the construction of a Web page where people can read and make comments on Nextel.

I sincerely apologize for any inconveniences. The Nextel National
Connect 300 for $39.99 rate plan, I listed as an option since
the Communication Advantage 250 rate plan did not come with Regional
Long Distance was a better plan. You get Free Long Distance
as opposed to Regional Long Distance, 3600 Night & Weekend Minutes
as opposed to 500 and 300 Cellular Minutes as opposed to 250.
If you wish to accept this plan I will give you a 10% discount
until the end of your Service Agreement.

Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please
don't hesitate to contact us at http:
//www.nextel.com/NASApp/nol/WCCustomerCareServlet

What I want is what I signed up for so I wrote:
That is not true. It did come with regional long distance. Please see the attached jpeg file.

I will not be renewing when my contract is ended in May of 2002 unless Nextel makes restitution for the illegal long distance charges and restores my previous service.

I do not deal with BAIT AND SWITCH operations. There are many honest companies I can sign up with.

I have received no answer.

The Communication Advantage 250 did at one time provide free regional long distance for a 5 state region California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, but then changed so that only the Communication Advantage 400 or higher provided that feature. unfortuneatly right now I do not have the materials to verify what date the change took effect.

If you still have an active account, call into customer care and have them route a request to the billing research dept concerning this issue, if you have not already. Billing Research Reps have the information regarding the dates the regional long distance for this plan was active...keep in mind that they have a 45 day dispute policy...so the best way to have a issue resolved is to call in immediately after the first bill in which this error incurs..

Thank you for your time, and I hope this info is helpful
