CRAIGS LISEDE USED CAR SCAMS

Started seeing these scam adds as I shopped for a used vehicle.  I scan the North Florida  CL used car posts daily and am reporting them to Craigslist, the Real Ebay motors, the FBI's cyber crime unit IC3 and the FTC. With all these groups and agencies I know that this has the same chance of  pursuit as looking for a single flea on an elephant!  Maybe you can help where NO ONE else has?

All postings are on central and north Florida Craigslist. I suspect they're nationwide, and are originating in, surprise, NIGERIA!

The scam works like this:  A 2001 or newer is listed with a 50% or less than retail price, never more than $2,500. The listings look quite professional, & pics are very good and actually the car described. Ad descriptions are very similar and many describe a hard luck reason for selling the car. Knowing they're scams I send a one word reply "interested"

The response is always the same and written by non native English speakers and asks me to send my name address, and phone number so that I can receive an invoice from Bay motors or Google pay services, both obviously bogus. Here is a sample

I`m a single mother with 2 children and I have to work very hard to maintain my family. I`m selling it so cheap because I have money problems. The price is $2,500.00. I want to tell you that I do not sell my car in payments and I do not trade. Since I don't have anyone to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay. I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do this. Giving the nature of this transaction please note that my sale terms are final and nonnegotiable. In order to move forward I will need your full name, address and phone number so I can register the deal at eBay Financial Department. After that, eBay will send you the payment instruction(s). If you are
still interested email me for picture and details.

I received this exact email from 4 different women re four different vehicle posts in one day.

I respond with a fictions name , address, & phone.

I then receive very good fake invoice, (forwarding a copy of the fake Ebay invoice, with a FAKE Ebay invoice as the subject) telling me to purchase either a Moneygram or Western Union money order to be sent to the AGENT at name and address listed on the form and then my car will be shipped to my home AT NO COST to me. Such a deal!

After receiving the invoice I respond to the invoice sender and the seller with the following message:

Hello,
Just played you to get the invoice which has now been forwarded to the EBAY Motors, GMAIL security and fraud, Florida's AG's office, Gmail, Walmart corporate Security, Moneygram Security, FBI, IC3, FTC and all Jacksonville TV stations tip lines.  Your Nigerian location makes you somewhat secure, but with the information you provided, about the "Agents" to send the money orders to someone will be getting a knock on their door and you'll be getting "0" $'s!!    Your CL posts are SO EASY to spot and I WILL keep pursuing you until you cease operations.

I'm really enjoying my new hobby, and will continue scam reports ad your emails, building an ever increasing case for the federal investigators. PLEASE, keep on posting!

Regards

dave
