Hi! You don't know me but I could very well be your daughter, your sister, your wife, or your friend. I am an honest person with an otherwise perfect driving record who is now unjustly facing auto insurance fraud accusations.

In October of 2003 I purchased my first car- a little red 1998 Honda Civic- and first solo insurance policy. Barely 4 months later in March, the car was stolen from the parking lot of my job. I did everything you are supposed to do following a theft. ie. call the police, contact insurance company Thankfully for me, a coworker volunteered to drive me the 35 miles home that night. The car was recovered the day after it was stolen in a drug and crime ridden area of Irvington, NJ. It had been badly burned, after some of its parts had been removed.

NJCURE took possession of the car and started their own investigation and paperwork. Three months later, in May, I received a letter stating my claim had been denied. It didn't state why, all it suggested was that I write an appeal. Which I did.

In late June when I didnt get a response to my appeal, I contacted the NJ Dept of Banking and Insurance. They launched their own investigation.

I didn't have reliable transportation to work for the month of May, was often late and lost my job at the end of the school year. Not having a car severely limited my job prospects. I haven't worked since July because the numerous jobs I have applied to require a car/reliable transportation. I haven't been able to pay bills, I was 2 months behind in my rent and risked eviction, and I am up to my eyeballs in debt from living off my credit cards. All because NJCURE wont pay my claim.

In August, I sent another letter to the insurance company - demanding an explanation, a new claim adjuster, and access to my file. I received a rude letter, reprimanding me, and essentially putting me in my place as a "helpless consumer".

I called to speak to my represenative at the NJDOBI and he told me there was nothing he can do because NJCURE had recently sent my file to the state prosecutor to investigate as insurance fraud. When I asked this represenative of the state, what can an innocent people do to protect themselves - he said NOTHING. You are at the mercy of the insurance company.

Apparently, the insurance company can and will accuse you of fraud when they dont want to pay your claim. I have been warned to anticipate being arrested, going to court, and having the insurance company try to pressure me, and humilate me into confessing to a crime I did not do.

The craziest part is, that even if they paid maximum value for my car, I still would have owed over $2,000 on my car note. A car note, I still have to make payments on because I have 48 more months worth of payments, and can't afford another car because I'm still paying for one that doesn't work.

The bottom line is money. And the fact they dont want to give you any. If you are a female, young, low/moderate income, and minority - you are more at risk. Insurance companies think they can bully you. Dont let them!

Save yourself time, money, aggrevation, and sanity - by STAYING AWAY FROM NJCURE. Please learn from my mistake, the couple of dollars you save with this company costs you customer service and satisfation. Pay the extra money, and go elsewhere.

NJCURE has terrible wait times when you call them

#5Author of original report

A few things I forgot to mention in my haste were..

1. NJCURE does not have agents. Their entire processes is normally done by mail. (supposedly to save money) I USED to work in Princeton where they are located and thought I would speed up the paperwork process by dropping off some requested paperwork one day before heading home. (in the rental car they told me to pick up, that is now costing me $900 when it should have only cost me $300)

Prior to having shown up in person, my claims adjuster, Sheila Donoher, was pleasent, polite, professional, and most importantly - helpful. I had no problems getting her on the phone or having her return my messages. However after meeting her(during which she did a double take), all that dramatically changed. My name and phone demeanor can be confusing, and I while I am not one to play the race card - here I have no choice but to.. I truly believe that after she discovered that I was not "white" she felt no reason to be of any assistance. She was rude, impatient, unprofessional, and extremely unhelpful after I met her.

2.)NJCURE has terrible wait times when you call them. You can easily be left on hold for 15 -30 minutes waiting for "the next available represenative." They have a department mailbox you can leave a message in if you dont want to hold - but despite their promise of a return call in 24 hours - it doesn't always happen.

3.)The company that financed my car recently told me that as far as they were concerned the car is totaled and that I could cancel coverage for the car dating back to it's recovery. I have recently submitted that request and am waiting for some type response.

4.)The company is insisting that their "engineering expert" has determined that the car could not have been stolen without use of a key. (The two keys that were given to me when I sold the car were still in my possesion at the discovery of the theft) But when I asked if they came to this conclusion by disecting the car, I was told no. The "engineer" does not remove any part of the car. Considering that it was a Honda (one of the top 3 brands of stolen cars in the country-obviously can't be that hard to steal or it wouldn't happen soo often)with a faulty alarm system -and the "engineer" didn't disect any part of the car I fail to see where they could have drawn this conclusion from. Plus after speaking with many people about this, I have been told that it is possible to hot wire a car in 30 seconds if you know what you are doing... The "insufficient ignition damage" is from what they are disclosing the only apparent "evidence" that they have supporting their "suspicion of fraud".

5.) Because of the extensive fire damage, it is unreasonable to expect the average person to have the repairs done on their own. It's not a matter of just refurbishing the interior, it's a matter or rewiring the entire car - AND replacing the parts that are gone.. from what the police told me, my air bags alone had atleast a $1,000 value. I didn't even look under the hood to determine what else was missing but I was told the battery was gone too.

6.) I'm not looking to argue with industry type people, or random people with too much time on their hands.. I'm looking for sound advice, recommendations.. and a place to vent and organize my thoughts.. Please dont be counter productive.
