I received an email which eventually directed me to a website offering free one-year subscriptions to magazines. It did ask for a credit card number and in the fine print it did say that the second year would be bill automatically if you do not cancel the subscription.

I subscribed to two magazines in early July 2001. I carefully watched my credit card statements expecting that there might be some bogus charges popping up, but there was nothing for months. There was also nothing in my mailbox, as I never received a single magazine.

On April 12, 2002 - more than 8 months later - two charges appear on my credit card from NSS for the two magazines. I went online looking for a NSS website so that I could find a way to contact them, but instead only found the many complaints on this website instead.

Thankfully someone found their phone number and posted it thier complaint so that I could call NSS. After the typical automative messages, I hit 0 and got an operator. She said that she canceled the two subscriptions and that the charges would be removed from my credit card in the next bill cycle or, however I am a sceptic after everything that happened and got her name and a confirmation number.

I have alerted my credit card that if they are not reversed, I want to file to refute them, because you only have 60 days from the first statement they appeared on to refute charges such as these (unless your card was stolen). If I wait two more billing cycles before I complain, as the company asked me to, then the 60 days will be up and I'm screwed if they still aren't removed.

What I thought was most ironic and galling was that the operator said that I might continue to receive the next few issues of the magazines and that I should keep them complements of NSS. I've been waiting for those 'complementary' magazines for more than eight months now and all I've gotten is $55.97 in charges.

I have filed a complaint with the NTC and I would encourage everyone else who has complained on here about NSS to do so as well at www.ntc.gov

Well here goes, I work for a credit card company and I handle these "NSS" charges. I recieve about 150 complaints a day from customers who have tried to remove these charges, they all report the same thing; a recording that gets them nowhere. Some customers even go as far as cancelling thier accounts with the credit card company.

It's not the credit card company. It is "NSS", my best advice for you(the victim)is to call your credit card company and have them removed. However it doesn't always work.

Two weeks ago I recieved complaints that "NSS" wasn't removing all the charges. In some cases "NSS" was just removing some of the charges ie: if you had three subscriptions they would only take off two.

If you keep complaining to your credit card company they will help. Report "NSS". A year ago I had phone call offering me three magazines subscriptions and I accepted, fortunately I closed my credit card shortly after so I was never a victim to these unlawful charges. Report "NSS" to the BBB and any other organization that will help.
