O, The Oprah Magazine Invoicing Bureau Deceptive Repeat Subscription Invoicing Scheme Harlan, Iowa
My wife signs up, and we pay for, an 18-month subscription to O - The Oprah Magazine. Later on, about 2-3 months into the subscription period, we receive another invoice notice for a 1-year subscription. This is actually an extension of the original 18-month subscription, but you can't tell from the invoice. There is a very small item in the margin of one of the folds indicating EXP JAN 13 - which is actually the expiration of the original subscription (in our case January 2013 - or about 14 months from today). If you ignore it, subsequent invoices are sent with increasingly harsh language concerning collection, etc. I cannot believe that this practice, with such a high profile face as a front for a lapping subscription ripoff, hasn't hit the news at some level.
