We received a call from a service that claimed they wanted to verify our correct listing for a phone and web service.   Although we made it clear we did not want to pay for this service, they insisted they just wanted to clarify our contact info for this "Free" listing.   We are a small non-profit offering nature and science experiences to children, so we do like to share our name and services, which is probably why one of our employees spent time verifying our contact information.  (This was early November.)

Fast Forward Two Months:  I've known for years to check carefully my phone bill, both at home and at work.  We noticed on our AT&T phone bill an additional charge of $29.95 on the last page from OAN.  OAN is a third party billing agency but the charge was from Better Benefits ORG.-Webhosting monthly.

When I called to question the charge, the person said she could cancel it, but could not refund the money we had already been charged.  She claimed to have our agreement recorded and named the name of a staff person who works here, but does not handle administrative matters.  When I listened to the tape, the voice of the telemarketer was difficult to understand, an eastern Indian accent, as others have mentioned but he said he was from California.  The business I called (Better Benefits) said they are in NY, NY.

The woman was very calm, cool and professional, claiming that we are liable for the $29.95, even when I told her I plan to fight this.  She gave me a fax number where I can send all our phone numbers so that we can request to be on their Do Not Call list in the future.
