Without any notice or warning, my current SBC phone bill had an additional section added with charges for something I never even heard of existing:

Item Date Description
No.
6-01 6-23 Residential Voice One Time Setup 15.74
Billed on behalf of Residential Voicemail
Questions? Call: 1 800 331-0641

Government Fees and Taxes

#New services provided and billed

Total OAN Services, Inc. Current Charges 16.21

I will be requesting SBC to drop these unknown charges
immediately and post this ripoff here so that others
may check their bills and put an end to this outright theft.

Calling SBC was an effort in futility as all they would say is that they are required to bill me for anything and everything from anybody. I asked how they have the nerve to bill me for something where I don't even know what it is or the supposed company doing the billing. I also asked to speak with a supervisor and was told I would be called back in 24 to 48 hours which I said was unacceptable, specially as I could only call them between 8am and 4pm M-F to talk about their billing practices... I was really hot under the collar!

Having no other recourse, I called the number 1-800-295-3933 given on the SBC bill for "RESIDENTIAL VOICEMAIL" and, after entering my information including phone number twice, I got connected to T.J. Hoffman who explained what their service was, gave me their website address (www.residentialvoicemail.com), apologized for the mistaken billing, suggested I deduct their charges in paying my SBC bill and promised to reverse the billing ASAP but said it would take up to two months for that to happen. Evidently, one of their customers in a town near me signed up for the service but slipped a digit in providing their phone number so, since SBC does not check names, the billing went to my phone number (and the service must have been present as well) instead of hers. Very nicely handled and I hope others with similar problems will avail themselves of TJ's kind help!!

The presumed "ripoff" is concluded except SBC never did call back.
