I purchased a HP color Laserjet printer at my local Office Depot on Dec 17th. I also purchased one soda and one package of laser paper to print on. The cashier had a difficult time scanning the laser paper and called over another manager or cashier. This was someone who had a key to a drawer, so I am going to assume it was a head cashier or manager.

The store was very busy and the line long. I had been shopping all day and was very tired. I am a member of AARP, and am over the age of 50.

The manager then wispered to the cashier that she couldn't scan it because I didn't have a gift card and she would need to give me this to ring up the sale of the laser paper. I didn't pay much attention to this, but the cashier told me I was "Receiving" a $40.00 gift card. I assumed this was some sort of Promo for having purchased a high line product and didn't check the sales slip before I left the store. I received a rebate form for the product and Left the store thinking I had a FREE $40.00 gift certificate and my rebate form.

Later on, after the store closed I looked at my receipt. I was CHARGED for the $40.00 gift certificate which I never wanted or even asked for ! This was intentional and deliberate on the part of the store manager and cashier. It was not a mistake. It was fraud plain and simple.

I paid the bill with my office depot credit card, but will take back the FREE gift card to the store and try to get credited for it, if not I will dispute it when I make payment. Then I will pay off the balance of my account and close it. There is no annual fee associated with this account, but I have had problems before with this store. They often leave rebate signs up even after it's past the rebate period to get people to purchase items. I don't know if it's all of the office depots that do this, but I never have had this problem at STAPLES where I also do business and have a store credit card.

Yes, that is what should have happened but didn't...read the paragraph again....

"The store manager called me and apologized for the problem and offered me the gift card for free! Said that this is a training problem , and they should have """deducted the $40 gift card from the total once they had scanned the item.""""

Did you check how much they charged for the printer

If you look at the recipt you will see the printer was 40 dollers cheaper then you thought it was because they cant just give you a free card they charge you for the card then deduct it from the item.

I went back to the store the next day and went to customer service. It seems that this is a problem that they have, when an item cannot be scanned they use the gift cards to ring up the item, then the gift card is supposed to be deducted at that time.

The store manager called me and apologized for the problem and offered me the gift card for free!Said that this is a training problem , and they should have deducted the $40 gift card from the total once they had scanned the item. Was very nice about it all. Problem solved.

What Does One Have To Do With The Other?

It sounds like they put the "free" $40 gift card onto your bill, which is a ripoff. But what I an wondering, is the fact that: "the store was very busy, the line was long, I had been shopping all day and was very tired, I am a member of AARP and over the age of 50, have to do with anything else. Just wondering why that was thrown in. It sounds like you have a valid complaint. Don't muck it up. Two suggestions. One, look at the receipt before you leave the store. Two, go right back to the store as soon as you notice the problem, ask to speak to a manager and have him issue you a credit and get a copy of the refund/credit. Keep a copy for future reference. It's more difficult after you've paid the bill. You end up with a credit on your card.
