In Connecticut, state and American flags are not taxed. Set, including pole and hardware are. But, just plain flags are not. Except at Office Max here in New London. As the cashier said "If it has a price tag on it, we charge tax!"

Dear Mr van der Lyke:
Thank you for the suggestion. As you know, current United States and Connecticut flags are exempt from sales tax. The exemption applies to the sale of the flag. If the flag is sold in a kit with the hardware to hang or display the flag, the exemption does not apply.

Here is what the State had to say about it:

"I will recommend that an article about the flags and the sales tax exemption be included in an upcoming issue of our quarterly newsletter for retailers, Connecticut Tax Topics.

We appreciate your message. Please let us know if we may assist you further.
Sincerely,
Taxpayer Services Division"

Wonder how much the consumers were taxed during the rush for flags after 911. By the way...sure, the flags are made in China.
