I took my car for an oil change on 8/3. The young man servicing my 2011 Subaru Outback told me my car required synthetic oil. This is the second time they have tried to pull that with me, which is probably why it s the first time in 2 years that I have been there.

I told him he was wrong . He then went to the computer, pulled a manufacturers spec sheet on my car, showing me that synthetic oil was required. He also said he got the from the Subaru website. Another total lie!

When I again refused, he spoke to another guy, who in a loud voice, said they would just put that on my information, that I refused, in case there was a problem. Really??!

Just to confirm,  I called Subaru when I got home. They also confirmed that it was completely incorrect.

They need to be stopped. First, they tried to take advantage of what they thought was my ignorance. But worse than that, they presented me with a spec sheet that was completely manufactured by them!

I am keeping that sheet and intend to follow up with the BBB if necessary.

The corporate office has contacted me and explained what might have happened. Subaru requires synthetic oil in all Outbacks after 2012. Mine is a 2011. They contacted me by phone and in a letter, and I am satisfied with the outcome.

Ken

Colorado,

I found Subaru itself, had oil recommendations that COULD be misleading..here's from one site..

5/27/11- Subaru has conflicting statements about Recommending vs Requiring synthetic oil.

> Synthetic is required on all 2011 turbo and 2.5L Foresters
> 2011 Outback, Legacy, Tribeca, Impreza, (exc turbos)-  Some owners manuals will recommend using synthetic but not require it. Owners manuals printed around March 2011 presumably indicate all Subarus require synthetic oil.
All 2011 models use 5w-30 except the Forester X which uses 0w-20
2011 maintenance schedule

2011 Forester 2.5Ls,and all turbos ( WRX, STI, Forester XT, Legacy GT) have required it since the start of the model run.

Maybe the oil change place really wasn't running a scam. Looks like there's plenty of room for doubt that they are a Ripoff.
