Think you have total service with On-Star?  According to their advertising, coverage is available any & every where.  Well apparently it isn't.

I was just advised, in a contract renewal letter, that On-Star services were not available in my area as I live in a celluar analog area.  On-Star signals are only available if you live in a updated digital area.  Additionally, your internal system and instrumentation will read that you are connected to On-Star when you are actually off-line.

I called On-Star about this, which they confirmed.  Told them their commercials lead me to believe that if I have a wreck in a mountainous area that I will have coverage.  Since I live in a area with abundant parks that have road access, but not necessarily digital access (as per my cell phone reception), and multiple "dead zones", then if I had an accident or needed assistance should I assume On-Star would not be my rescue option.  The On-Star representative wasn't sure if I would have coverage or not, and  I was given the run around for about 10 minutes and finally the call was dropped.

Satellite based phone system ?

#2Consumer Comment

I  always thought  that their phone system was satellite  based, so  it should not depend upon local antennas and phone services.   If  that is true what  you  are saying, consumers are mislead and all what they are getting is  a regular cell  phone service which only works within the reach of local antennas.
