The man who called said he was working on a special project with one of the Country Clubs in the area by putting together a book a local businesses. First red flag, after he got my name I was immediately transferred to another person. This person was one of those salespeople that don't let you get a word in edgewise. They ask you simple questions about your business in a conversational way. To make himself seem more legit he even through out names of my customers who recommended me for their magazine. The names were probably just made up, he even said I might not recognize the names since I probably have so many customers. Anyway, he went through his whole script about pricing and how he could give me a deal. I asked his where I could get my hands on this magazine to look at it. He directed me a website with a digital issue that was for no city imparticular. It was full of real looking ads and copy with 555-0000 phone numbers. It was a really simple website in terms of content . So we get to the part where he's asking for my email address so he can send me a contract, verifying my physical address, etc. He's reassuring me that once I get my spot secured they won't speak to anyone else in my industry. Then come my payment options. I told him that I would not give that info at this time because I still needed to do my due diligence about the publication. He assured me it was only to hold my spot and that if I decided to cancel I could do so within 10 days. I said no again. He got really concerned and asked why. I let him know that I'm not going to give anyone that info if I have never heard of their company or seen their product. He acted like his feeling were hurt. Then he told me that in the time we were on the phone his associate had spoken to a few other people in my industry and they might want to take my place. I should have just hung up the phone but I kind of like to see how these guys react to rejection. I told him I felt uncomfortable about being backed into a corner. He told me that was his intent. He just doesn't want this deal to go to someone else. So he lowered the price again. I told him that didn't make any difference. He said he understood. He wanted to ask me one more question, he wanted to know what I knew about 3 other business in my city that are in my industry. I told him that I had heard of one but not the other two. He said that they had all called his company about advertising but he wanted to know their reputation first. I said maybe he would have better luck getting them to give up their money. Hurt feelings again he said that's not what he was trying to do. Then he said that he could hold my spot with no financial down payment. I guess he was just trying to earn my trust for the next time he called. I said no again. I said I would contact him if I decided his company was a good fit for us. He went silent. For about 15 seconds nothing was said. He put the phone aside and started talking to his associate about me. Said he had given me all these nice incentives and how could I think he was just trying to scam money out of me, and he thought he was a pretty nice guy, and blah blah blah. He picks up the phone and says, "Hello?" I say yeah I'm still here. He says oh I'm sorry. I tell him good luck.
