I wanted to take a moment to address something which has been obvious to me for some time, however not mentioned in these reports as of yet. I can not speak for all of the States Nationwide, however there are seperate laws on how to treat an independent contractor and an employee.

In the State of Florida an employee is one who is given all the resources to do their job. From Training to business cards. An employee is then TOLD what hours they will work and when. Sometimes there is a fine line! For an example, if you are a teacher, you get a salary based on the expectation of 37.5 hours a week and must report between the hours of ____ am and not leave until ___ pm.

An Independent contractor on the other hand is just that INDEPENDENT! If you are not on salary, you are to work the hours you believe it will take you to make whatever amount of money that you decide you want to produce!

Let us take Transcon/Options as an example.
Why do Independent contractors get told that they must report to an Open call per week? Why is it that all trainees are mandated to be at the Open calls for that entire week?
If they are so successful, then Scouts should be on salary and become an employee and they can use those Scouts to run an Open call. Oh, wait! Not many that I have been aware of have been assisted in this venture to get salary!

Even one of the best socuts I have seen made salary and then the enrollments stopped... the scouts numbers did not drop. However the percentage of enrollments went from the 5 or so per week to 1 in the month of June!

Of course there is the thing of if you work the 40 hours per week you will make money. Well, that is if Corporate enrolls the individuals you bring into the office. I have factual numbers that show a Scout who brought in the numbers requested on Orientation. This scout produced numbers equal to and exceeding expectations. According to the statistics, 35% should have closed. If done so, Salary would have been awarded in less than one month. The average which Corporate closed was between 12% and 18%. Quite a difference!

Do the math! This scout did not make enough money to stay and if a tally was done to divide what was actually made and the hours worked, the hourly rate was average for Florida. About $10.
And if there are about 30 scouts per office each week we can say that maybe 5 of them actually go out and create the numbers requested with a desire to prosper as stated in the Orientation. 12-18% does not make an individual much money to motivate staying, however if you take 5 scouts for every office and take the money made on that same percent, how much money is out there?
Who is making the money?
If the scouts were, why would most still be Independent contractors? Why would such a huge amount of them leave?
Of course there are some who are not cut out to scout. However, how many are good at it and have brought in quality people and not made enough money to stay?

If you are an independent contractor who is being told what hours to work you are being wronged! If you are not in Florida I suggest that you discuss this question with the Department of Labor or the Department of Regulation in your State. Although the Better Business Bureau may or may not produce accurate results all of the time, it does state that an inquiry was made as to the stated 'salary' which a scout makes. THIS has not been addressed by the company at all!

So, take a stand. If you are in Florida (or any State which has a definition of Independent Contractor vs Employee) simply scout for the hours you desire. See how long the company lets you stay!
If you have been blessed to make Salary then run the open calls and do what you are supposed to do for the company!
How many would be running the open call in YOUR office?
