I applied for this master card offer I recieved in the mail as a quick means of financing some expenses, in anticpation of an overdue bonus from my employer. Recieved credit card via "express mail" two days later to find out that the credit limit was only $300.00 and when I called the "customer service" line (not even an 800 number), the automated account information reported a current balance of $94.00 and available credit of $206.

This card is completely useless. The custeomr service rep I spoke to replyed to my dismay in an almost condesending tone that "oh, I didnt' realize what the credit line would be". Why at my age and salary would I even apply for a credit line 300? I was told that these were the terms,etc....
So now I'm stuck with a useless credit card and I owe them 94 dollars. To make matters worse, this is with HSBC, whom I have been a retail customer since they were still Marine Midland in 1996.
I am afraid to even attempt to cancel the account becuase they'll no doubt tack on a cancellation charge. I feel this was a complete misrepresentation and a big rip off.

If you have not activated or used the card, you can contact customer service, tell them you do not want the card, and they can close it out under "buyers remorse." They will close the account, not report to the credit bureau, and not hold you responsible for the annual fee, but this is only if the card has not been used at all ... if you have charged something on it, its too late.
