A couple of years ago I ordered a book directly from a reputable catalogue house and paid by credit card. I recently received another book in that series from Oxmoor House with a bill attached.

Knowing that federal law provides that I need not return nor pay for unsolicited merchandise, I filed fraud reports with the Federal Trade Commission, the United States Post Office and the Attorney General of the state of Iowa, where Oxmoor House is located. In addition, I sent notification to every company I could find that did business with Oxmoor House.

After all that, I complained to Oxmoor House, insisting that they reply in writing stating that I owed them nothing and that their actions would not affect my credit rating.

I received a reply from Katherine Carlisle, Customer Relations. Although she insisted that I had an account, she credited my (nonexistent) account and stated that my credit rating would not be harmed. Since then, I received an e-mail from the Oxmoor House legal counsel and once again, explained the situation.

I am sufficiently satisfied that I will not be dunned, but will not retract any of the complaints that I filed with the authorities. If I find that my credit has been damaged, I will open up this can of worms again.
