Complaint Review: Ozark Fitness Center

Ozark Fitness Center ripoff -continued billing after contract; non-existant "business office" Springfield Missouri

I added a family member to an initial contract, and the entire membership was supposed to be canceled at the same time. Two years later, we are still trying to get them to stop charging us for this expired "member-add-on" (which, again, was supposed to expire at the same time as my original contract): each time we speak to them, they refer us to a non-existent "business office" (number only plays ads; no way to contact a human).

When I spoke to the managers in person, they said I can't delete another family member's account; when my husband goes, they say they can't delete it because it was signed by me. (My contract, btw, was up over 18 mos ago.) And when we go together, they say their account manager will contact us--then give us a voicemail account that is never answered--nor are the calls returned (of course).

They also frequently "accidentally" double-debit my bank account. The hours spent we've spent trying to get my measly fitness fees back have far exceeded the amount of time spent in their (run-down, most-equipment-new-but-broken) club.

I signed up with Ozark Fitness after a high pressure sales person sold me on a package for me and my girlfriend. We used it fairly often for the first 6 months and then kinda waned on the visits to the facility. We signed up on 10/01/03. Our contract was up on 10/01/04. Well towards the end of 2005 when I realized that I visited the place once in a 12 month period I decided that I was giving these guys 54.00 a month for nothing. I called to cancel or at least take her off and leave me on...should drop to 25.00 per month right? Basic mathematics and logical deduction being used here. Well apparently to cancel they required that I send a written confirmation of this request to some business office in China. Well not China but some national office in nowhere America. They would not honor my request to cancel my membership over the phone, and they told me I would be paying the same if I dropped my girlfriend from my plan. Ok...whatever. So I called today to take myself off of the auto-payment method and was informed that I had to fax my request to some (303) area code. These guys are really a piece of work, The local YMCA or hospitals in town offer equal services for less and are more customer friendly.
