It was about 8 p.m. on a weeknight when a friendly young man came to my door, ostensibly to sell magazines. He said he was involved in some type of senior contest, and also that he was going to win a trip to Cancun, I believe, if he sold so many more magazine subscriptions. He said he was 21, and he talked about his mother a lot.

I am a sucker for helping out college kids, so I agreed to buy the New Yorker, and gave him a check for $40. After he left, however, something kept nagging at me -- something wasn't right. Maybe because he kept pushing so hard for cash instead of a check -- I don't know.

So I researched his company -- Palmetto Marketing Incorporated -- online, and found many, many complaints against them about individuals selling magazine subscriptions. Suspiciously, just like the kid, "Dion McNutt," who came to my door. Friendly, fast-talking, with a trip to win or a contest to finish.

I cancelled the check right away, and I'm am going to fax a "cancellation order" to the company first thing tomorrow, just to cover my bases. Beware kids with magazine sales -- unless it's your coworker's kid doing a magazine drive for school, don't bite.

They may bite back.
