Payless Car Rental at the Pittsburgh airport is like one of those muggers who prey on tourists knowing that, even if they are caught, the odds of the victim being around to testify at the trial are slim.

On June 17, 2013 I rented a car from them whose dashboard announced low tire pressure two hours after I left the airport. The pressure when I checked it was so low, and the pace of the leak (revealed by subsequent measurements at one day intervals) so slow that there was no way the leak could have begun after I acquired the car. It was low and leaking when they handed it to me. I topped up the pressure for the trip back to the airport, and the two and a half hour journey wasn't long enough for the pace of the leak to trigger the sensor, again proof that the tire pressure was low, and the tire leaking, when Payless handed me the vehicle.

I reported the slow leak when I turned the vehicle in. A week later, once I was home in another state, Holly Wright of their Pittsburgh office called to inform me they were charging my credit card $190 to replace the tire. Inspection had revealed a "piece of metal" in the sidewall, which made repair impossible she said. I protested that the vehicle had to have had the damage when they rented it to me. Her proof that it had not was that none of the prior renters of the vehicle had reported anything.

So if you want the powerless and infuriating experience of someone sticking a gun in your face and demanding your wallet, no need to look for a mugger, just rent a car from Payless.
