I should not have blamed the victim. I get these emails all the time and they do look legit, I can see how someone can be fooled. That was insensitive of me.

However, it is also not fair to bash paypal for this either. Some scammers are using their logo and setting up fake sites to look like paypal, but they have nothing to do with paypal.

Paypal certainly does not promote fake auctions, they actually have many safeguards in place to protect sellers and buyers. When a scammer fraudulently uses the paypal name and logo to scam people, it is bad enough. But then when someone actually blames paypal when paypal is a victim as well, they are not doing any good.

It would be some help if the poster could let us know which fake auction is charging the debit card and bank account so others can avoid the site as well, and the rules I left can be used to help others from falling into the same scam.

The scammers have been known to use ebays and paypals name and it only can tarnish their reputations. Trust me paypal would prefer if these scammers were shut down, but there is really nothing they can do. By the time the sites are busted and shut down, the victims have already been fleeced and usually the scammers have gone without a trace.

If an actual paypal account was used on a fake internet auction, the buyer would have plenty of recourse.

What an idiot to blame the victim. The OP is right, take your brand of advice somewhere else.

Only the consumer "lets" this happen...

Paypal is not "letting" this happen. They are victims as well. It is up to the consumer to make sure they are not giving personal information to an illegitimate site.

This is a new age, and with it comes new scams. Paypal is not giving a false sense of security, it is the scammers that are illegally and fraudulently using paypals name and logo to add legitimacy to the emails, phony sites and "phishing" schemes.

Internet rule # 1

NEVER click a link left in an email that is requesting personal information. ALWAYS go directly to a companies site using the known web address you manually enter in the search bar.

Internet rule # 2

It is up to the consumer to avoid fake internet auctions.

Now if you really wish to help anyone by reporting here, why not let us know which fake auction is charging your debit card and bank account.
