I have had friends with this and tried the product myself to test the facts they claim and it can be removed, there are detailed instructions (obviously, don't follow the ones from the company itself it will just make it worse) on the Internet concerning removing it.

The safest option is to backup your data and format/reinstall. Then, ensure you only use trusted, reviewed programs by a reputable source (check in comp magazines or online magazines such as Toms Hardware Guide for reviews of products and their suitability).

Installation of a firewall (Kerio is free for personal use), virus checker (I use Norton {pay} or Antivir personal {free} and backup one, for this I use Panda's online checker because more than one virus killer can make problems in itself) and malware/spyware removal tool {I use X-Cleaner and Microsoft's {pay and free respectively}.

If a product claims to wash your dog whilst fixing the computer registry, deleting viruses and so on, don't install it - a large list of claims from one program (and the fact it can 'fix' errors that don't exist, or if it reports 100's of errors) is likely bogus.
