My email was not reaching intended reciepients so i phoned my ISP Comcast. Unfortunately I didnt have my bill to locate the proper tech support number so I googled it and that is when the trouble began. Unfortunately there was an 855 number on google I used. REAL tech support is 1-800-Xfinity.

The 855 number got me to a fradulent entity posing as Comcast Tech Support. They asked to access my computer so they could look to see if there was a virus or malicious software residing on my comuter. They showed me a file on my computer that they claimed was a virus called CSRRS.exe and a file called KBOOFACE.

The fradulent comcast tech said he could get me immediate support online with a company his manager liked called PC WONKS and i was to pay $399 for this service. He asked me type in my contact info to the notepad which i questoined as Comcast should have had this info. His response was to prevent any clarical errors. I was then told that he woudl transfer me to PC WONKS.

PC WONKS then told me all the add on services they offer 3 year and 5 year protection and free updates to QUicken and QUick Books. They then asked me to write a CHECK for a total of $698 and to mail it to them at an address in California.

Being a business person i was concerned and wanted the virus' off my computer asap! I allowed them access to my computer and they said it woudl take about an hour and a half or so to complete their work.

I texted the technician that works on my computer and told him the names of the files they claimed were mailcious files...and CSRRS is a Microsoft system file. It is likely that the Kbooface was a screen from somewhere else..not my system.

At this point I terminated the session with PC WONKS.

It occurred to me that they were likely copying files from my computer so I closed all my bank account and credit cards. This took a bunch of time and focus from my business for many days.

PC WONKS continues to call me from rotating numbers in New Jersey. Their accents are East Indian as opposed to the accents of the real Comcast which are from Indonesia / Phillipeans and Carribian.

I immediately found the real comcast tech number on my bill - 1-800-XFINITY and called them. I asked for a supervisor who helped me re-install Norton Security Software.

I was feeling somewhat safe...but then the next day my outgoing emails were again not reaching my clients!!!!

My computer went to my Technical department and I used my office computers to change all passwords. I found on my COMCAST ISP account that someone was in my account as a user...and that she was "suspended" .

LESSONS:

  1. Always check your billing statement for the real Tech Support number dont google it!
  2. Comcast will never send you directly to a 3rd party
  3. Peiodically check your ISP account and make sure nobody has re-directed your emails!

Be careful out there...the Internet can be a dangerous place!!
