Pentagroup Financial Rip offs! Crooks! Houston Texas
These crooks sent me a collection letter for a Cingular account, I made a settlement agreement with them and payed with a credit card at Paymybill.com. Then they sold to remainder of the collection amount to another collection agencey out of Bloomington, IL.... AFNI. Check out thier BBB file in Houston. These are the companies that give other compaines a bad reputation!

This item was paid back in 07/2005. Just last Sep 06 did AFNI jump on the bandwagon. I paid the orignal bill through paymybill.com, so I am not worried that they have a CC# to use. I filed complaints with BBB office in both locations and disputed the credit report enties. I won't pay them another dime. Thanks for all the responses!

Some collection agencies will agree to settle with you for far less than you owe and then trun around and hire another collection agency to collect the difference.
However, in many states this is illegal. once a creditor deposits or cashes a full paument check, even if they strike out the words payment in full or writes " I don't agree" on the check, they can't come after you for the balance.
Texas is one of those states.
Do you have any proof that this was a paid in full settlement?
watch your credit card, now that they have the card number, they can take another payment and claim, you allowed it.
This is why I agree with Steve from Florida, NEVER pay this bottom feeders. There nothing but low lifes and rip off's.
I would report my credit card lost or stolen and get a new credit card number, tell them not to issue you anew card with the same credit card number.

If not, you probably are out of luck but I will let Stevem or "J" address this specifically. In the mean time, dispute the amount owed. How long again was this??

GENERAL INFORMATION FROM VARIOUS SITES ON DEALING WITH COLLECTION AGENCY'S
Tell them to validate by
. What the money you say I owe is for;
? Explain and show me how you calculated what you say I owe;
? Provide me with copies of any papers that show I agreed to pay what you say I owe;
? Provide a verification or copy of any judgment if applicable;
? Identify the original creditor;
? Prove the Statute of Limitations has not expired on this account
? Show me that you are licensed to collect in my state
? Provide me with your license numbers and Registered Agent
1. NEVER talk to a collection agency on the phone. Period.
2. Keep good records. This can be the difference between a good and bad settlement. Don't expect them to remember you or what you agreed upon.
3. Send all correspondence via registered mail, receipt requested and put the registered mail number ON THE LETTER. DO NOT SIGN THE LETTER ? TYPE YOUR NAME
4. Keep a copy of every letter you send.
5. Penalties and extra interest are typically fictious amounts of money added on by the collection agency to pad their profits. Sometimes as much as to 50% of the debt or more claimed to be owed by a collection agency consisting of interest and fees. This is illegal, every state has usery laws (which dictate the maximum interests allowed to be charged. That is except North Dakota. There are no such laws which is why most credit card companies incorporate there.) Junk debt buyer pay anywhere from 1 cent to 7 cents on the dollar, there is no way there is this much interest.
