Instead of taking my 94-Mazada to some sleezy shop, I took it to where I thought that it we would be cared for by professional mechanics. I took it in for AC repair and was charged $148.00. I never thought it would it take another 3 visits and $600.00 to fix what they could have caught the first time I took it in.

They kept giving me excuses that it was going to need little simple repairs- finally got pissed when they told me that it was going to need a new compresser at a price of 400+labor=$600+what I had already paid($150.00)-What started as something easy turn out to be huge problem. In the hole for 150.00 no AC.

I work at a body shop and I get this complaint all the time but....
How can you test an AC system without refrigerant? Please enlighten me.
Tell me another thing... that bill that was $100+ how much of that was refrigerant and how much was labor? I bet the refrigerant was expensive wasn't it?
Do you think it was an expensive job because the price of R-134 went up maybe or what? Let me know how much an ounce of refrigerant is then maybe you have room to complain.

I work for Pepboys in the Fort Worth Area and I would put the reputation of my shop against any. I think that somthing important to remember is that PepBoys has 600+ stores in the United States and that's a big company to watch over.

With that many stores your undoubtly gonna have some bad apples in the group and from the look of some of these reports alot of 'em seem to be in California. Your gonna find dishonest Service Writers, Service Managers, and Service Technicians in all areas of the country no matter how big or small the shop is.

One thing you should remember is that it's up to you the driver/consumer to educate yourselfs some to watchout for dishonest people. I work with 4 other guys in my shop with the least experienced one having 18 years in this industry. And all of them stress the importance of quality/honesty in this field. (I've only been in this field for 2 years proffesionally.)

One of our rival PepBoys stores in the area I guess you could say is notorious for ripping people off. So just remember that not all stores are the same cause each store is ran by different people who your gonna get different results with.

If he has 500psi on the high side, the thing is about to rupture violently.

Stay away from that guy.

Please make sure you hold on to all your paperwork should you decide to go to another place to get it fixed. You will most likely have the new mechanic laugh at what they quoted.

Lord knows you paid enough for it.

Ripoff Report has 274 listings for Pep Boys and I have to let you know that over the years I have always paid WAY more than the original estimate from these people.

I had some brake work that ran hundreds more than what I had been quoted and there was NOTHING I could do about it.

Hope your AC gets fixed and hope you never have to go back to these people again. This is a NATIONAL scam. I have used them in 3 different states, all with the same poor results.

Took me 3 tries to learn, only cost you once!

Good luck!

I went to school to work on vehicles. I am certainly not the "Best" in my field, by I had pretty high grades.Leak detecting for an air conditioning service problem is pretty routine. However, you actually have to know "How" to use a UV leak detection kit, or at least "pretend" like you know how in order to save your customers money. also, if there was something wrong with the compressor, a knowledgeable mechanic would have tested the system to make sure that cold air was actually blowing from the vents. This poor lady who had to make 3 trips definately got the run around from Pepboys. It gives good mechanics a bad name, and remember, a mechanic who went through the trouble of getting their associates degree from a reputable school would have saved this dear woman a lot of grief. I applied for pepboys before I started school. I changed my mind during the interview process. I realized then, they werent looking out for their best assets, their customers.SHAME ON PEPBOYS!

I know that you probably won't listen to me since I am an employee of the company but here goes anyway. Air conditioning systems are very touchy. I work with them on a daily basis and see problems just like yours. Leaks can spring up in a number of places We can not predict the future as can no one else. I have told people that it would only take a recharge and that the a/c would work fine. If you have a weak compressor then it could leak once it is charged up. Keep in mind that the high side of an a/c system had about 500 psi of pressure in it once it is fully charged. I would tell you to talk to the service manager and see if they would give you a free evact and recharge if you agree to pay for a new system to be put on. I would agree to that in my store. One last thing you vehicle is a Mazda not Mazada.
